The climax of “X-Manhunt” unfolded in an expected manner. Professor X, determined to rescue his daughter Xandra, broke free from Graymalkin Prison. In a race against time, he swiftly grabbed the final Krakoan egg and evaded both the X-Men and X-Factor. With the aid of Sage from X-Force, Xavier managed to accomplish this feat. The only individual capable of saving Xandra was Lilandra, whom Xavier subsequently resurrected. In “X-Manhunt Omega” #1, penned by Murewa Ayodele, Gail Simone, Gleb Melnikov, Fedrica Mancin, and Enid Balam, we witnessed this couple struggling to evade the X-Men and Earth, with Cyclops and Magik hot on their trail. Through clever telepathic tactics and additional assistance from Sage, Xavier and Lilandra successfully escaped. However, before departing, Xavier bid a heartfelt farewell to his students, informing them of his intention to leave for the Shi’Ar Empire alongside Lilandra.
The series “X-Manhunt” concluded as Professor Xavier bid farewell to Earth, expressing warm sentiments towards his pupils, to reunite with his long-lost love. This raises the query: will this departure be permanent? Previously, Xavier has taken temporary leaves for the Shi’Ar Empire, but could it be that Marvel plans to keep him absent from the X-Men this time around? Given the complexity of Professor Xavier’s character, examining his past might provide insights into whether or not he will return to the X-Men.
Xavier Is a Very Different Character Than He Used to Be
In the first issue of “X-Manhunt Omega,” I, as Charles Xavier, find myself with an unprecedented sense of clarity after years that have been nothing short of perplexing. My 21st century journey has been a rollercoaster ride, to put it mildly. Following John Byrne’s tenure on “New X-Men,” I left the Mansion, joining Magneto in Genosha and handing over leadership to Cyclops. This status quo held until the “Dangerous” storyline in “Astonishing X-Men,” where it was revealed that I had been aware of the sentience of the Danger Room and had exploited it for the X-Men’s training. Shades of grey were beginning to emerge, but darker times were yet to come. The events of “X-Men: Deadly Genesis” unveiled that I had dispatched a team of mutants, including Cyclops’ brother, to Krakoa to rescue the original X-Men before the All-New, All-Different Team. After their demise, I wiped everyone’s memory. As the X-Men comics progressed, I found myself drifting further and further from my dream, evolving into a full-fledged antagonist to ensure the survival of mutkind.
For years, Xavier distanced himself from the X-Men, allowing Cyclops to grow and mature into a mentor figure as intended. Unfortunately, Xavier was ultimately killed by Cyclops during the Dark Phoenix saga, which some fans saw as a somewhat redeeming death. However, when he returned, Xavier resumed his questionable behavior in “Astonishing X-Men” (Vol. 4) and ushered in the Krakoa Era, where he once again took charge. But this wasn’t the wise mentor of old; instead, he became increasingly complex and even manipulative. In fact, many fans now view Xavier as a deceitful character, despite his apparent clarity. The recent “X-Manhunt” storyline revealed that Xavier’s actions at the end of the Krakoa Era were part of a larger plan to save the mutant race, but fans still harbor negative feelings towards him. It seems challenging for Marvel to rehabilitate such a controversial character right now; they may be choosing to focus on other aspects of the X-Men universe instead.
Xavier Will Return, but It Won’t Be for a Long Time
It might be beneficial for Xavier to keep his distance from the X-Men, as Marvel has given him a complex backstory that left many fans feeling differently about him. By sending him to the Shi’Ar Empire and reducing his involvement, Cyclops can remain the main character of the X-Men. The rise in popularity of Cyclops has made it more engaging for viewers to watch him handle leadership duties rather than Xavier. Over time, the X-Men have evolved beyond just Xavier’s influence.
Given Marvel’s current plans, it seems unlikely that fans will witness a significant shift in the X-Men’s status quo. Tom Brevoort, who has taken charge of the X-Men books, appears to be preparing the team for their upcoming debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). By this time, he aims to restore a classic setup at the X-Mansion with Professor Xavier as the mentor. This scenario seems reminiscent of the beginning of “X-Men ’97”, catering to fans who may not regularly read comics but have been drawn into comic stores by Marvel Rivals or other Marvel Studios productions. However, it appears that Brevoort is not introducing any fresh concepts for the X-Men; instead, he’s planning to bring back Professor Xavier, even though a permanent absence might have been more intriguing. While it would be more engaging if Xavier were gone forever, Marvel doesn’t seem inclined to make such a drastic change.
