Is Resident Evil 5 Getting a Surprise Remake? Fans Speculate!

Twice within a short span, games from the Resident Evil series have received ratings for play on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S by the ESRB. Just last month, it was Resident Evil 6 that got an ESRB rating, while this month it’s Resident Evil 5. These games have been accessible on Xbox platforms for a while now, and both have received remastered versions on this console. This has sparked curiosity among the series’ followers, who are left pondering if there might be an upcoming announcement from Capcom in the near future.

With the remake of Resident Evil 4 having been released in 2023, one obvious conclusion is that Capcom could be planning a remake of Resident Evil 5. ESRB ratings have spoiled announcements ahead of time, so it wouldn’t be unheard of. However, if that really is the case, it would make more sense for there to be similar ratings for PlayStation 5 and PC. As we noted last month, it’s possible this could all boil down to a mistake on the ESRB website’s part, but it feels like a stretch to believe that it happened twice now.

It’s reasonable to infer that Capcom is likely developing the next primary installment in the Resident Evil franchise, although there have been whispers about further remakes without any formal confirmation or disclosure about what’s coming up next. Remastered versions of earlier Resident Evil games have been a welcome addition during the gaps between main series releases, and fans are excitedly anticipating which game will receive this treatment next. While it seems plausible that Resident Evil 5 could be due for an update given its sequential position, both Code: Veronica and Resident Evil Zero are older titles that might gain more from modern updates. In fact, many series enthusiasts would rather see these games remade instead.

In contrast to the divisive reception of Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil 5 was more warmly received by fans. The game’s emphasis on action rather than horror sparked debate. However, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard marked a return to horror for the series, which was well-received by fans. If Capcom decides to remake Resident Evil 5, it will be intriguing to see if they strike a better balance between action and horror elements. It’s not unprecedented; the Resident Evil 3 remake addressed many issues in the original game.

Last week’s Capcom presentation was a missed opportunity for unveiling their secret projects on Resident Evil. Instead, they showcased Monster Hunter Wilds, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Capcom Fighting Collection 2. Fingers crossed we won’t have to wait too long to learn about what the Resident Evil crew has been brewing, as all these mysterious ESRB teasers are making fans scratch their heads, wondering where this enigmatic future is taking us!
