As a dedicated cinephile with a deep appreciation for intricately woven narratives and complex character relationships, I find myself captivated by the developing bond between Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) in House of the Dragon. Having devoured George RR Martin’s “Fire and Blood,” I’ve been intrigued to see how this adaptation would explore their dynamic.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon season 2 episode 6.
In the second season of House of the Dragon, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), who is currently engaged in his mission at Harrenhal, appears to no longer be essential for Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy). Her bond with Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) has become stronger and more significant.
Previously serving as Daemon’s master of spies, Mysaria recently declared her allegiance to Rhaenyra. She facilitated Mysaria’s release from confinement at Dragonstone earlier this season.
After preventing Rhaenyra’s death at the hands of Ser Arryk Cargyll, the spymaster became a trusted advisor to the queen.
However, the dynamics of their relationship have taken an unexpected turn, contrasting significantly with the portrayal in George RR Martin’s “Fire and Blood” novel. Here’s the latest update.
What’s happened between Rhaenyra and Mysaria?
As a passionate film lover, I was thrilled to see Mysaria’s resilience at the start of the new season. Despite being targeted by Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) in a lethal attack towards the end of the last season, she miraculously made it through.
As she hid aboard a ship intending to flee, she got caught by Ser Erryk Cargyll and ended up imprisoned at Dragonstone instead.
Previously, Mysaria provided information to Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans). This was later discovered by Daemon, who challenged her about it.
Mysaria frankly admits to Daemon that she worked for Otto as far as his funds allowed. When she insists she’s unaware of Otto’s schemes, he locks her up instead.
Shortly after this, he grants Mysaria her liberty if she reveals to him the identities of assassins capable of infiltrating the Red Keep, leading to the infamous “Blood and Cheese” plotline from episode 1.
After Jahaerys passed away, Rhaenyra questioned Mysaria about her involvement in his murder. Mysaria revealed to the queen that she had given Daemon two names as part of a deal for her freedom. Believing her words, Rhaenyra granted Mysaria her freedom.
After a short while, I notice something amiss as I observe Ser Arryk making his way toward Dragonstone. Acting swiftly, I manage to prevent harm from coming to Rhaenyra, thwarting an attempted assassination.
The next time they cross paths, Rhaenyra expresses her gratitude, while Mysaria hints that her extensive spy network could significantly benefit Rhaenyra’s goals.
When the queen questions why Mysaria is offering her assistance, Mysaria explains that she’s seen nothing but kindness from the queen, which is something the common folk of King’s Landing are lacking in their leaders.
Mysaria helps facilitate a private meeting between Rhaenyra and Alicent Hightower (played by Olivia Cooke) in King’s Landing, guiding Rhaenyra to a secluded location to discuss potential peace before war breaks out.
In episode 6, the duo’s bond deepens as they work together on a mission to deliver provisions to the citizens of King’s Landing.
In a forthcoming gathering, Rhaenyra expresses her concern that she may not emerge victorious in the war, and acknowledges Mysaria’s unwavering allegiance with gratitude.
Mysaria confides in Rhaenyra about a painful experience from her past. She’s thankful that Rhaenyra recognizes her as an equal. Additionally, Mysaria trusts that Rhaenyra is destined to rule. Rhaenyra hugs Mysaria and they exchange a loving kiss.
Based on my own experiences and observations, I believe that their connection could be a blend of deep-rooted loneliness and something more substantial. Having gone through similar situations myself, I can attest to how powerful the feeling of companionship can be when you’re alone for an extended period. But, what sets apart a casual friendship born out of mutual loneliness from a budding romance is the potential for growth and deepening connection.
One thing’s for sure – Rhaenyra is all the more dangerous with Mysaria by her side.
What happens in the book?
As I sat down to watch the latest episode of House of the Dragon, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of excitement tinged with trepidation. You see, I’ve read George R.R. Martin’s “Fire and Blood,” and I knew that some major plot points from the book were set to unfold on screen. So, dear viewers, if you haven’t delved into the rich history of Westeros’ past yet, beware: spoilers lie ahead!
In “Fire and Blood,” the author does not portray a romantic connection between Rhaenyra and Mysaria. Instead, Mysaria is depicted as Daemon’s lover, carrying his child but ultimately suffering a miscarriage.
During the Dance of Dragons, she functions as Rhaenyra’s secret advisor, yet Daemon persists in having a romantic involvement with her, which seems to have Rhaenyra’s consent.
The book portrays Mysaria as steadfastly devoted to Rhaenyra, implying they have much more to experience together.
In the United Kingdom, the second season of “House of the Dragon” is being broadcast on Sky Atlantic and NOW. For information on how to subscribe to Sky Television and watch it, please explore the relevant signing-up resources.
