The long-awaited sneak peek for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” was unveiled on Tuesday, offering Marvel enthusiasts a glimpse into the unique, blend-of-past-and-future setting of the latest Fantastic Four family. Right from the start, “First Steps” distinguishes itself from all other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions, although it shares one obvious link with the broader franchise that fans will quickly identify. This connection is none other than the Baxter Building, the headquarters of the Fantastic Four, which bears a striking resemblance to the renowned Avengers Tower.

View Urgent ForecastInitially, the Baxter Building appears to share a striking resemblance with the Avengers Tower, introduced by Tony Stark in the early phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Both structures are located within New York City. While there are some adjustments made, it’s crucial to keep two points in mind regarding this scenario. First and fundamentally, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is (most likely) set in a different timeline compared to what we’ve been following throughout the MCU. Secondly, Tony Stark constructed Avengers Tower upon an existing structure on the same plot of land, which could have effortlessly mirrored the Baxter Building.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but point out a striking similarity between some of the interior shots from the latest Fantastic Four trailer and familiar scenes from the Stark/Avengers Tower we’ve seen in previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The circular design with towering windows offering a panoramic city view (and a cozy bar tucked away) seems strikingly reminiscent of the setting where Loki and Hulk had their infamous “puny god” exchange in The Avengers.
The renovations inside clearly match the era, yet there are numerous striking resemblances between them. The ceiling lights in specific spots seem identical, the bar is placed in a comparable position, and the steps leading to the conversation pit – a classic retro design element – are found in approximately the same spot as those in Tony’s rendition of the tower.
Discussing the likenesses between these two structures inevitably brings up a point that’s as big as Robert Downey Jr., a figure who significantly contributed to launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his portrayal of Tony Stark in Iron Man. Over time, he became the central pillar of the franchise. Following his character’s demise in Avengers: Endgame, he’s set to rejoin the series in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, taking on the villainous role of Doctor Doom.
It’s common knowledge that Doom serves as the arch-nemesis of the Fantastic Four, and is poised to become the major antagonist in the upcoming Avengers series. The comic book “First Steps,” set in an alternate timeline, lays the groundwork for a Doom who has been active for some time but hasn’t yet encountered the Avengers. This could explain how we end up with a Doom who bears a striking resemblance to the man who once led the Avengers and saved an entire planet.
It’s plausible that he contributed to designing the Baxter Building featured in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, further connecting him with the Tony Stark we’re familiar with from the MCU. Alternatively, Doom might acquire the building and reshape it according to his own vision, similar to how Tony remodeled it.
It strongly suggests that Downey’s Marvel Cinematic Universe comeback might occur sooner than anticipated, potentially appearing as soon as this summer with the release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” in theaters.
