Since it was revived on Paramount+, the show has maintained its reputation for gripping narratives. Despite taking a two-year break following its cancellation in 2020 on CBS, this classic procedural didn’t lose its momentum. Instead, the rebranded “Criminal Minds: Reborn” is thriving even more. It’s also delving back into some familiar plotlines, featuring several favorite characters from the series’ history.
Absolutely, there are many fresh characters introduced as well. One such newcomer is Elias Jasper Voit (played by Zach Gilford), a notorious cop-killer and a seasoned criminal with a long list of offenses. His malicious actions often cause trouble for the team, much to their dismay. Additionally, it’s possible that he has connections to one of Criminal Minds’ most cherished characters.
Who Is Voit in Criminal Minds: Evolution?
- Coincidentally, Zach Gilford’s first television credit is within television’s most beloved and long-running police procedural, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
- Zach Gilford’s character is the show’s first unsub in the show’s 18-year broadcast history to earn a spot in the main character roster.
Known as Lee Duval, he is the latest enigma in a series of elusive subjects from the Criminal Minds universe. Apart from murdering police officers, Voit has garnered an unsavory reputation due to his relentless stalking and serial killing activities. His numerous crimes have earned him the ominous nickname “Sicarius,” reminiscent of a deadly spider species. Although Voit’s methods of operation may change, his murders are infamous for their extreme brutality – even by Criminal Minds standards. He delights in torturing and killing his victims with an uncaring savagery.
Additionally troubling, Voit keeps several captives confined in a shipping container. To round off his wicked acts, it’s also revealed that he has a history of cruelty towards animals. Metaphorically speaking, Voit debuted in the first season of “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” which simultaneously marked Season 16 of “Criminal Minds.” His introduction vividly showcases his violent nature, particularly as he gruesomely dismembers one of his numerous victims, solidifying his image as a ruthless and heartless killer.
The Link Between Rossi and Voit
- Criminal Minds’ outstanding popularity inspired a South Korean adaptation. While the adaptation kept the show’s title and premise, it lasted just one season, completing and ending its run in 2017.
- Another spin-off, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, had a similarly short run. The CBS show debuted and ended in 2011. Its total length spans just thirteen episodes.
In Season 18, or Season 3 of “Evolution,” Voit endures a severe injury during a prison assault. Following this incident, he falls into a coma-like state. Upon regaining consciousness, the notorious killer appears to have forgotten much of his past. Doctor Julia Ochoa (played by Aimee Garcia) determines that Voit is suffering from retrograde amnesia, creating an ethical quandary for the BAU team. This diagnosis potentially opens the door for the serial killer to be granted a more lenient release due to his memory loss.
Trying to avoid the risk of letting Voit wander unchecked, the group endeavors to jolt his memory. In one of these attempts, Voit inadvertently recognizes Rossi as his father, but due to his amnesia, this recognition is merely a momentary confusion. To clarify: David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) is not Voit’s biological father. Instead, Voit’s past proves to be intricate and puzzling. The team manages to locate one of Voit’s surviving victims, Ramona Havener (Kerry Knuppe), a real estate agent, and persuades her to converse with her potential killer.
Although understandably hesitant, Havener eventually gives in. This choice brings some necessary resolution, and she departs from the meeting contented. On the other hand, Voit recalls that his biological family perished in a fire. Consequently, Rossi’s sudden parenthood is merely a misleading clue. While Voit’s initial discovery can be exploited for dramatic effect, it strays far from reality. The disclosure also corroborates the fact that Rossi is a widow, and his only living child is Joy Struthers (Amber Stevens).
