2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” or MOM for short, carried on from where “WandaVision” concluded, following mom Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) as she delved into the Darkhold’s dark sorcery to find her lost sons, Tommy and Billy Maximoff. The corrupted Scarlet Witch then confronted Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) when she aimed to seize America Chavez’s (Xochitl Gomez) multiverse-traveling ability, a power she intended to use for escaping her reality and rejoining her boys. However, as Wanda regained consciousness — recognizing herself as a mother, not a monster— MOM concluded with Wanda’s demise as the Scarlet Witch collapsed a castle on Wundagore Mountain, annihilating every copy of the Darkhold across the multiverse.
It appeared that Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) confirmed Wanda’s death by being released from a spell that deprived her of powers in the Scarlet Witch. However, Marvel pulled off an unexpected twist in the latest issue of TVA, which combines elements of the Marvel Comics Time Variance Authority with its on-screen counterpart (as shown in Loki and Deadpool & Wolverine):
The Scarlet Witch is alive. Or, at least, not dead.
In issue #3 of TVA, penned by Katharyn Blair (from Loki) and illustrated by Pere Perez, follows immediately after the previous installment’s cliffhanger where Owen Wilson’s character, Mobius M. Mobius from the TVA, was attacked by a mysterious figure in green cloak, whom he thought was Tom Hiddleston’s Loki (who vanished into the multiverse at the end of the Loki series). Fortunately, Mobius manages to survive this encounter, and it is discovered that he was wounded with fragments of a reality shard – a piece of the Reality Stone, one of the six Infinity Stones possessing the ability to alter existence.
In my perspective, as I assist in Wunmi Mosaku’s B-15 role where we scour the timeline for any signs of reality shard activity, Sophia Di Martino’s Loki variant, Sylvie Laufeydottir, casts a spell on Mobius’ mind to help us locate his would-be assassin.
Currently, the TVA’s Research & Development team, comprising characters displaced from different universes such as Gwen Stacy (Ghost-Spider), Peggy Carter (Captain Carter), and Remy LeBeau (Gambit), are examining a string of mass hallucinations that have been sweeping through the multiverse. These hallucinations, known as The Madness, seem to be contagious, much like a virus.
The events unfolded as genuine expressions of people’s deepest anxieties, and the Madness is tied to the “delusion” haunting the corridors of the TVA. This apparition guided Gwen to a hidden department beneath R&A in a dream, and Mobius had a similar vision before he was attacked. The TVA’s probe resulted in the detainment of James “Jimmy” Hudson, the mutant son of Wolverine and half-brother to twins Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver from the original Ultimate Universe.
Jimmy possesses an alibi, prompting Gwen to pursue proof of his innocence by exploring the corridors from her dreams. As she suspects that these visions may be leading her to a floor beneath R&A through some kind of “dream-walking,” Gwen’s investigation eventually leads her to the Department of Deferment. It is here where she uncovers the Scarlet Witch, who seems identical to her portrayal in the TV show MOM.
On Instagram, Perez responded positively when someone questioned whether the character in TVA was indeed Elizabeth Olsen’s Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Scarlet Witch. When another user inquired if Perez meant the “MCU Scarlet Witch,” he confirmed that she is, in fact, the one from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The TVA series ties into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as its roots can be traced back to the comics, which is evident in issues of Thor and Fantastic Four, but it gained significant popularity within the MCU. According to Blair on the Official Marvel Podcast, our set designer Kasra Farahani, series creator Michael Waldron, and executive producer Kevin Wright expanded upon these origins and created a captivating setting that I eagerly looked forward to exploring each week, making it feel like this place has fully materialized within the MCU.
She went on to say, “We’re returning the TVA to its original comic realm, which is quite fascinating.” In other words, it links back there. However, it should be noted that for now, this particular version of TVA is heavily influenced by comics.
Blair continued by saying, “I’m portraying a humorous take on what transpires following Loki’s sacrifice. Since I’ve been deeply involved with ‘Loki’ season 2, I’m now channeling that experience into the comic version of the TVA, creating a sort of amusing blend between seriousness and humor.
TVA #3 is on sale now from Marvel Comics. The five-issue series concludes on April 30.
