As a seasoned movie critic who’s seen more twists and turns than a winding Shetland road, I must say that Shetland continues to captivate audiences with its gripping narratives and complex characters. The latest season 9 was no exception, delving deep into the emotional turmoil of DI Alison “Tosh” McIntosh (Alison O’Donnell) as she grappled with a case that stirred up her past.
In the ninth season of Shetland, Tosh (Alison O’Donnell) and Calder (Ashley Jensen) faced another round of challenges.
In the recent installment of the BBC drama, the storyline centered on the murder of Annie Bett, a former friend and undercover agent for Police Scotland’s Counter Terrorism Unit who was also close to Tosh. This case, as per O’Donnell, put the Shetland veteran in a difficult position.
However, the growing bond between the two investigators played a crucial role in assisting Tosh in finding her bearings again.
O’Donnell explained that she feels quite drawn emotionally to this specific case, which might slightly affect her objectivity,” or simply, “O’Donnell pointed out that she is personally invested in this case, which could potentially influence her judgment.
She went on to say: “Previously, part of Calder’s annoyance with Tosh stemmed from her lack of self-belief. However, this year, in a manner unique to Calder, they have helped Tosh gain faith in her own judgments.
At the end of season 9, they shared a deserved glass of wine following their discovery of Annie’s killer. Yet, could there be additional mysteries lurking ahead?

Is Shetland returning for season 10?
Yes – Shetland season 10 has been confirmed.
“So I would always have one eye on, ‘OK, is this the moment?’ Because you feel like you sort of are traversing up the way, like a roller coaster, and we got a little extra boost with season 8 and the sort of refresh.
I’m really looking forward to the point when we reach the summit, after which we can stop. I don’t fancy the idea of starting our descent.
Speaking further, O’Donnell pointed out that although everyone is willing to set aside their doubts for the sake of the production, there must be a limit to how long one can spend in such a confined space.
