Enthusiasts of the PlayStation brand are optimistic that an update from Sony might signal the return of a cherished PS3 series which has been inactive during the PS4 and PS5 generations up until now. This update particularly revolves around the revival of a trademark for a nostalgic and inactive intellectual property that hasn’t seen a new game since 2012. Although the renewed trademark suggests PlayStation’s intention to keep the series alive in some form, it likely does not mean what PlayStation fans are yearning for: a new game, remake, or anything significant along those lines.
As a devoted fan, I can tell you that to extend the trademark for the specific IP (which they’ve already renewed in Europe), PlayStation simply needs to show some minimal activity or use of it. Given that this IP is an integral part of their PlayStation Plus service, this level of usage more than suffices to keep the renewal process going smoothly.
The news about renewing the trademark for this particular intellectual property (IP) has been circulating widely – from discussions within PlayStation communities, buzz on social media, and mentions in reports – all while fueling speculation that PlayStation could be planning something significant related to the IP. It’s plausible, but important to note that it’s purely speculative at this point. Although PlayStation may need to demonstrate action with the IP to continue renewing its trademark, they can do so without necessarily creating a major new product right away.
Regarding the IP under discussion, it’s the Resistance franchise, a shooter video game series developed by Insomniac Games, who have lately gained fame for the Marvel’s Spider-Man games. The Resistance games are available across the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita platforms. Noteworthy is that no new game in this series has been released since 2012.
Given that Insomniac Games has shifted focus towards larger projects, and since the Resistance series didn’t achieve significant commercial success for Sony, it’s highly improbable the franchise will see a major revival. If it does resurface, it might be as a remaster or remake from another studio. This trademark renewal could hint at this possibility, but it’s purely speculative and seems like a long shot at the moment.
Currently, neither PlayStation nor Insomniac Games has responded to the European trademark renewal speculation. We don’t anticipate this to change soon, but if it does, we’ll keep you updated.
