Sony doesn’t operate like it used to.
Over time, we’ve grown accustomed to this modern age of PlayStation, where it communicates with users primarily when there’s something important to share – and surprisingly falls short in delivering satisfactorily on those few instances when it does.
It’s not surprising to find out that it seems unlikely there will be any sort of PS5 presentation this summer. So far, the platform holder hasn’t said anything one way or another, but there’s been no talk about an upcoming livestream – these kinds of events usually leak well in advance.
It appears that the company might surprise us with a sudden announcement, but right now, things seem to indicate that they plan to sail through the upcoming months without any major announcements. Instead, the launches of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei could become their spokespersons.
So how much does this matter?
It’s worth noting that if the company has something to unveil outside of the E3 period next month, they might not need to host their own showcase. For instance, last year, they presented Naughty Dog’s next game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet at The Game Awards, so they’re comfortable leaving the responsibility for major announcements to Geoff Keighley.
The Summer Game Fest could serve as an ideal platform for sharing any trailers they might have, given the situation. Notably, the event is expected to be overflowing with third-party announcements for PlayStation 5.
Historically, there’s been a long-standing rivalry between PlayStation and Xbox, with each trying to claim victory at E3. However, this year is different because Microsoft, traditionally the competitor of PS5, has decided to go multi-format and will be clear about which games are coming out on which platform.
Previously, our focus on Xbox’s broadcasts was primarily due to third-party involvement. However, this year, we’ll be paying equal attention to the first-party announcements too. It’s quite surprising to see how much the gaming industry has evolved since PlayStation’s iconic E3 presentation in 2015.
In our opinion, Sony should refrain from conducting a presentation if they don’t have significant information to reveal. The truth is, they have several major first-party games upcoming, but it wouldn’t be wise to showcase Saros and Marvel’s Wolverine yet because they are not close to release.
From our observations, it’s clear that a poorly executed presentation is less favorable compared to not having one at all. With Summer Game Fest and Xbox events coming up, we’ll still see plenty of PS5 games unveiled. In this context, Sony might as well wait until they have something significant to share instead.
We’ve moved far from the glorious period of PlayStation presentations, where events like E3, Gamescom, and Tokyo Game Show would successively showcase outstanding live shows. However, the video game industry has evolved as well: software is unveiled nearer to its release date now, and it takes more time than ever to develop these games.
To individuals who have experienced these prosperous eras, it might seem that Sony has left you behind. However, we don’t believe this is accurate; instead, we think the company has evolved. Although a consistent schedule from Sony would be appreciated for predictability, we prefer that they make their live streams significant and only hold them when they truly have something substantial to present.
What’s your take on the possibility that PlayStation might skip a presentation this summer? Does it seem like they’re neglecting their dedicated fanbase, or could this be a reflection of the evolving trends in today’s tech industry? We invite you to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
