Is Starfield Coming to PS5? ‘Keeping Games Off Other Platforms Is Not the Path for Us,’ Says Xbox Boss

Although Bethesda’s highly anticipated space opera, Starfield, was initially scrapped from the PlayStation 5 lineup following Microsoft’s massive purchase of its publisher, there’s a possibility that it might become available on Sony’s console at some point in the future.

In a conversation with reporter Destin Legarie, Xbox executive Phil Spencer was questioned about the future location of the interstellar RPG. The question essentially meant whether the game would remain in its current place for now.

“No,” Spencer said, after a dramatic moment’s deliberation.

He stated, “I see no need to set boundaries for any game by declaring it won’t reach areas where it could attract players or bring us profitable business.

What we discover enables us to run our business more effectively, thereby enabling us to invest in an exceptional selection of games, similar to what you witnessed during the Developer Direct.

We intend to make our games accessible, but we won’t release them on other platforms. That’s not an approach we consider suitable or effective for us.

In fact, the product is currently trailing 18% behind its predecessor, the Xbox One – a console that was already deemed a failure compared to the hugely successful Xbox 360.

It appears that, after investing nearly $100 billion in developers and publishers, with game costs escalating and Game Pass falling short of attracting 100 million subscribers, Microsoft is recognizing that it needs to shift towards third-party publishing to maintain financial equilibrium.
