Is The Last Of Us Season 4 Confirmed? Alarm Bells Are Ringing!

Ugh…I hate criticizing things.

As a film and television critic, it’s part of my role to express my opinions, but certain series like HBO’s “The Last of Us” adaptation tend to make me feel unpleasant when I have unfavorable thoughts about them.

I’ve discussed this show exhaustively, some might say excessively. However, being a strong advocate for its quality as one of the top video game adaptations, I’ve found myself delving deep into the subject matter. Lately, comments have been raising red flags, and I must confess, I am deeply worried about the potential future seasons, especially considering the possibility of a fourth. Let’s delve into the details.

I Know That The Creator Said There Would Be A Different Ending

To start, let me clarify a few things before delving into my reasons for feeling apprehensive. Previously, Neil Druckmann mentioned during an interview with Variety in May 2025 that the ending to the TV show might differ from the game’s ending. I find this acceptable.

I’ve been a strong advocate for the transformations made in “The Last of Us”. From the heartwarming love story between Bill and Frank in Season 1, to the significant role Jackson played in shaping the narrative in Season 2, and even the way they’re developing Ellie and Dina’s relationship—it’s all been well-received by me.

Overall, there have been more hits than misses in my opinion – though I’m not a fan of how Jesse was brought back into the storyline. However, I’m open to changes for the ending since it seems like an opportunity for improvement. Regarding endings, I prefer the one from Part 2 of the games, but if Neil Druckmann believes there could be something better, I’m on board with that.

But I’m Not Too Sure About There Being A Fourth Season

However, I really don’t know if there should be a fourth season.

When it was announced that there would be a Season 3, it seemed logical. The stories presented in Part 2 are rich and complex, as they follow the perspectives of two characters who are starkly different from each other. Cramming all of that into just seven episodes for Season 2 would have been extremely challenging, if not downright impossible. Therefore, I felt a third season was a sensible decision.

Yet, as stated by Druckmann during an interview with Collider in May 2025, it seems almost impossible to fully resolve the narrative solely through Season 3. Frankly, I share some of your skepticism on this matter.

Most Of The Story For Ellie Has Been Told

In plain terms, the game is divided roughly equally between Ellie’s and Abby’s perspectives. If you complete the whole game without seeking additional story content, you’ll spend an additional 2-3 hours before reaching the final act.

The main events of Ellie’s narrative have largely unfolded by now. We’re on Day 3 of this adaptation, and given its similarity to the original games, it seems likely that the conclusion will follow a familiar pattern.

We’ve learned that Season 3 is expected to delve deeper into Abby’s story, as Catherine O’Hara revealed in an interview with Variety back in May 2025. I can’t say for certain how many episodes the new season will have, but it certainly leaves me curious about what adjustments they might make to accommodate her narrative.

That brings me to Season 4.

Are They Going To Add More Episodes For More Story Or Drag Out Both Abby And The Last Part?

If there will be a fourth season, will Abby’s narrative continue into it, or will we introduce several new narratives to ensure that Season 4 has the same number of episodes as Seasons 1-3?

As a devoted film enthusiast, I’ve appreciated the recent updates, but they haven’t fundamentally altered the main narrative arc. However, the prospect of an additional season when I believe that Season 3 provides a satisfactory conclusion has left me feeling somewhat apprehensive.

It’s possible that I’m worrying too much, but it appears this might not be a good move. However, who knows? It could turn out to be one of HBO’s best choices, similar to casting Pedro Pascal as Joel in the The Last of Us series. For now, let’s stay hopeful and cautiously optimistic about the outcome.
