Is the Next Star Wars Episode 10 in the Skywalker Saga? What We Know About the New Star Wars Trilogy

As someone who has grown up with the iconic sounds of spaceships and lightsabers echoing through my childhood, I am thrilled to see the vast expanse of stories being woven into the Star Wars universe. The news about the new trilogy, spearheaded by a talented director like you, brings a sense of nostalgia mixed with anticipation.

A new Star Wars trilogy is being developed, and it will be penned by Simon Kinberg, known for his work on Star Wars Rebels and The Force Awakens. This series could potentially follow a new story with fresh characters instead of continuing the Skywalker Saga as previously reported. However, the details are still unclear as Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to comment on the matter. The Skywalker Saga spans nine films, starting with George Lucas’ 1977 original and concluding with The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. The upcoming trilogy could possibly be Episodes X, XI, and XII, but this remains speculative as other sources dispute the claim.

Disney has not yet made an official declaration about the upcoming Star Wars trilogy, which will be overseen by Kinberg and Kathleen Kennedy. However, they have confirmed that Jon Favreau’s movie titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu” is scheduled for a theater release on May 22, 2026. Two additional Star Wars movies are also planned for December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027, but the dates for other projects like the Rey movie have not been disclosed. It’s undecided whether the first film of the new trilogy, penned by Kinberg, will be shown in one of these slots. Favreau’s film will mark the return of a Star Wars feature to theaters since “Rise of Skywalker” in 2019. Following this, Lucasfilm shifted its focus from cinematic releases to Disney+ with series like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew (premiering December 3).

Kennedy stated during last year’s Star Wars Celebration that due to all the television work we’ve been involved in, we are delving into numerous storylines. This approach is inspired by what George Lucas mentioned years ago, that he designed Star Wars to traverse a mythological timeline, moving both forward and backward. Now, our aim is to widen this timeline, creating a vibrant future, developing the current events, and delving deeply into the past to narrate our tales. Kennedy further mentioned that the Star Wars universe will encompass “the past, the present, and the future” with stories set at various points in time such as the Dawn of the Jedi, before the era of the Old Republic and the High Republic, and beyond the events of the Star Wars sequels which concluded with the Resistance triumphing over the First Order and the return of Darth Sidious.

Some upcoming Star Wars films that have been announced are the realistic film titled Rogue Squadron, a movie featuring Donald Glover’s character Lando Calrissian, and a project from director Taika Waititi, who previously worked on Thor: Love and Thunder. In 2017, Lucasfilm announced a trilogy by the filmmaker of Knives Out, Rian Johnson, and in 2018, plans for a new series of Star Wars movies from the creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, which were not connected to the Skywalker Saga. However, these projects by Johnson and Benioff-Weiss have since been abandoned, and Lucasfilm decided not to proceed with a mysterious Star Wars film being developed by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Also in development is a secret Star Wars project from the director of Stranger Things and Deadpool & Wolverine, Shawn Levy, who has been working on this project with a script from The Adam Project writer Jonathan Tropper.

On December 3rd, Disney+ will debut “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.” Meanwhile, “The Mandalorian” and Grogu will be seen on the big screen starting May 22nd, 2026. It’s worth noting that the fourth season of “The Mandalorian” is currently being developed.
