A week ago, the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled, accompanied by a somewhat higher-than-expected price tag of $449. Despite this cost being lower than both the PS5 and Xbox Series X, it represents a $150 increase compared to the initial Switch’s launch price of $299. There has been much debate about whether President Trump’s potential tariffs played a role in this price hike; however, it appears that was not the deciding factor. In an interview with The Verge, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser clarified that the new price point is solely attributed to the system’s advanced technological features.
“Any previous tariffs were not factored into the price itself,” Bowser told The Verge.
Bowser explained to the media outlet that the increased cost of the revamped Switch over its initial version is due to several upgrades. These enhancements encompass aspects such as the refurbished and mouse-capable Joy-Cons, a larger display, superior visuals, and enhanced processing power. Each of these advancements contributed to Nintendo’s decision on the initially announced price.
It appears now that the console’s price might adjust due to recent developments. Nintendo set the console’s price on April 2nd and announced preorders for April 9th. On the same day, the U.S. revealed a 46% tariff on goods from Vietnam. Earlier this year, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa hinted at manufacturing in Vietnam and Cambodia as a strategy to bypass Trump’s proposed tariffs on China. If things remain unchanged, it seems that this approach is no longer feasible.
On April 3rd, Bowser informed The Verge that we’re currently evaluating potential effects of recent developments, as many businesses are doing at this time.
In an unexpected move, Nintendo postponed the U.S. preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2, originally scheduled for April 9th, stating they need to evaluate potential tariff impacts and changing market conditions. This might hint towards a possible price hike from the initial $449 in the United States. The rest of the world will still have the opportunity to preorder on that date.
Currently, it appears that Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5th. This suggests that a decision regarding its price may be coming up soon. Fingers crossed that the cost remains affordable, but there’s been quite a bit of dissatisfaction among fans about how things are unfolding. Across the nation, there’s been a wave of discontent related to tariffs, and some recent protests, including those in the U.S., have even held signs expressing concerns about how tariffs could affect Nintendo Switch 2.
