As a dedicated Nintendo gamer, I’ve stumbled upon an intriguing theory that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 might share some similarities with the classic N64. It’s been nearly three decades since the N64 graced our living rooms, and in that time, we’ve seen the GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and the original Switch. There have also been several handheld devices like the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy SP, DS, and 3DS. Now, with whispers of a summer release for the Nintendo Switch 2, I can’t help but wonder if there might be a nostalgic nod to the N64 hidden within its design or gameplay.
Prior to Nintendo Switch’s launch in March 2017, the latest Nintendo consoles to hit the market were Wii U (November 2012), Wii (November 2006), and GameCube (September 2001). Interestingly, the last time a Nintendo console was released during summer was the N64 back in June 1996. The Famicon, another home Nintendo console, was also launched during summer, but that occurred much earlier.
Is there any importance to this? It’s unlikely. Given that it’s been more than three decades since Nintendo launched a home console during the summer, it’s unexpected for the Switch 2 to debut in June, July, or August. Consequently, the earlier rumors might be incorrect as past trends indicate the Nintendo Switch 2 may not be released until fall or the holiday season instead.
It’s important to mention that not every region received the N64 in June; only Japan got it then. Historically, Nintendo launched their consoles first in Japan, but they now opt for a worldwide release instead. The N64 didn’t reach the United States until September of 1996.
At present, there’s only conjecture surrounding the matter. But should Nintendo indeed launch the Nintendo Switch 2 this coming summer as some whispers hint, it would mark a significant shift in their history, being the first instance where Nintendo unveils a global console during the summer season.
