As a seasoned fan who has witnessed the rise and fall of many a Gotham City villain, I can confidently say that The Penguin‘s spinoff series is shaping up to be a heart-wrenching tale of power, betrayal, and ultimately, sacrifice. From the very first episode, it was clear that Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobblepot was destined for greatness in the underworld, but not without a few twists and turns along the way.
From the very beginning of “The Penguin” series, it’s been apparent to me that the spin-off from “The Batman” might not have a happy ending. In the first episode alone, Colin Farrell’s character, Oz Cobb, begins maneuvering his way up Gotham’s criminal underworld. This was hinted at in the final scenes of “The Batman,” but what stood out in the premiere of “The Penguin” was that Oz didn’t seem to have a well-thought-out strategy. Enter Vic, skillfully portrayed by Rhenzy Feliz, who provided Oz with something he didn’t realize he lacked – a friend and ally. Six episodes in, with only one episode left, I’m convinced that Vic will meet his demise, and I fear that Oz may be the one to cause it.
The Penguin theory: Oz Will Kill Vic in the finale
From the very first episode of The Penguin, it was evident that Oz was feigning friendliness towards Vic, striving to seem on par with his recollections of Rex Calabrese from his past. Yet, the threats Oz directs at Vic don’t seem threatening to us, even though they undoubtedly frighten Vic. However, a single statement that Oz makes has remained etched in my mind, given the progression both characters have made since then.
Oz Cobb: “If you don’t follow my orders, I’m threatening to kill you and those dear to you.
Over the remaining six episodes of “The Penguin”, Oz solidifies his status as a significant criminal figure, while Vic undeniably assumes the role of Oz’s right-hand man with aspirations for greater power. In episode 5 of “The Penguin”, when Vic reappears and assists Oz in eluding the Maronis, their partnership becomes evident not just because they watch each other’s back but because they are both deeply invested.

Vic: “I only got one shot at this, I see that now.
Oz: “You came back, Vic. Put your ass on the line for me. A hundred Maseratis couldn’t replace that. It’s you and me now kid, til the end.”
In the upcoming episode, their alliance deepens, bringing a more intimate feel to their partnership. When Vic admits to Oz that he killed Squid, it creates a poignant moment between them, reminiscent of a father and son bonding after a difficult choice. Oz even shares some wisdom with Vic, acknowledging his strength and suggesting that killing becomes less challenging over time. This is the scene where their partnership reaches a new level of trust, but it also hints at the sorrowful events to come in the finale. As the series progresses, we see the strong bond between Oz and Vic develop, while also learning more about Oz’s past. This leads me to believe that a tragic ending is on the horizon.
In the novel “The Penguin“, Vic’s journey has been deliberately designed to resemble Oz’s ascent within the underworld. It remains to be seen how it will unfold, but I suspect that Oz will come to recognize a reflection of himself in Vic. This recognition may occur when Oz observes something about Vic, or witnesses an action he takes, which will spark a thought in Oz’s mind. Once this realization strikes, Oz will understand that Vic shares his unique ability to navigate and survive in this world.
Oz recognizes that Vic aspires to be at his level and poses a potential threat. Given that they might one day find themselves in similar positions, with roles potentially reversed, Oz is determined to act first. He may rationalize it as necessary, convinced that the situation could eventually be reversed on him. Whether he truly believes this or not, it’s a risk he can’t afford to ignore for his own security.
It seems that this conclusion aligns more with what we’ve anticipated throughout the series rather than an unexpected twist designed to shock viewers. The Penguin series has excelled in portraying Oz as a complex character, but remember, he is a DC villain who will likely retain his notorious status in The Batman Part II. Although the show has provided a deeper understanding of Oz’s personality, it must still deliver a satisfactory ending given its antagonistic lead. Concluding with this grim scene will not only solidify Oz as The Penguin, the ruthless gangster, but also highlight the tragic human aspects of his character. As such, Oz may be compelled to preserve his image of ruthlessness and distance himself from others, reinforcing a life of solitude. He has constructed a bed of isolation, and now he must lie in it.
