Is The Walking Dead: Dead City’s Glenn Reference a Timeline Discrepancy?

In the world of The Walking Dead, it’s challenging to keep track of time due to the apocalypse. We know that August 27, 2010, marked the end of the world as we know it in The Walking Dead universe, and The Walking Dead: Dead City is set at the latest point in the timeline (season 2 takes place around 2027). In the initial season, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) roughly estimates that he formed his Saviors group about “12 to 15 years ago,” which was not long before Negan’s gang forced Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and her husband Glenn (Steven Yeun) to their knees during the sixth season finale of The Walking Dead.

2012 marked the airing of “Glenn’s Last Day on Earth.

Glenn’s demise occurred roughly two years into the apocalypse, and the significant events depicted in the first seven seasons of “The Walking Dead” – from the CDC, to the farm, the prison, then to Terminus and Alexandria – were all compressed into a timeframe of less than 24 months. Given this rapid succession of events, it’s not surprising that Maggie might have mixed up when a touching moment with her deceased spouse transpired.

On Sunday’s episode of “Dead City,” titled “Feisty Friendly,” characters Maggie and Colonel Perlie Armstrong (played by Gaius Charles) share memories of the old world during their conversation. Armstrong fondly recalls a specific breakfast sandwich from a small corner store, while Maggie misses the taste of a Kit-Kat bar.

Occasionally, at the start of things, I’d stumble upon a candy bar. The last time I remember finding one was about three years ago, on my birthday. That’s when he surprised me, Maggie muses thoughtfully, hinting at Glenn without directly mentioning him.

The moment is being reexamined for a possible inconsistency in the sequence of events. Since the world ended three years ago, Maggie’s birthday gift of a candy bar from Glenn would have been given in 2013, but at that time, Glenn had already perished.

The sequence of events isn’t like something you’d see on “The Walking Dead,” making it tough to pinpoint exact timings. However, it’s worth noting that there was a significant gap between seasons 2 and 3 (approximately eight months), followed by another stretch in seasons 3 and 4. Additionally, about a month elapsed between the death of Maggie’s sister, Beth, and their arrival at Alexandria in season 5. Two weeks after that, Maggie announces her pregnancy, and unfortunately, Glenn doesn’t survive much longer than two months after that.

It’s hard to imagine that Maggie could have forgotten about breaking off a piece of a Kit-Kat bar 15 years back, but given how quickly events can unfold, it’s not entirely surprising. Plus, let’s recall, keeping track of time becomes nearly impossible during an apocalypse.

New episodes of The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 air Sundays on AMC and AMC+.
