Is Vergil Set for More Than Just a Cameo in Netflix’s Devil May Cry? Fans Speculate!

In the Devil May Cry series, we follow the character Dante, a half-demon and devil hunter who eliminates dangerous demons for payment. As the story unfolds, it’s revealed that his mother, a human, was murdered by demons seeking vengeance against Dante’s father, Sparda – a demon who had defied his own kind to protect mankind. Dante has a twin brother, Vergil, whom he initially believes is deceased. However, as the narrative progresses, it becomes clear that Vergil is alive and eventually emerges as the primary antagonist in the storyline.

Before the series debut on April 3rd, Netflix unveiled a preview of the older Sparda twin, Vergil, in their Devil May Cry. In this sneak peek, after Dante’s favourite strawberry sundae shop is assaulted, it appears that Vergil emerges from the flames. He remarks on the long-overdue reunion with Dante. This unexpected encounter leaves Dante in shock, as he believed his brother to be deceased. However, it soon becomes clear that the assailant isn’t truly Vergil, and Dante resumes his role as the self-confident mercenary, battling the demon imposter instead.

Fans Suspect The Cameo Might Not Be Vergil’s Only Appearance

Although the sneak peek of Devil May Cry didn’t confirm that it was truly Vergil, there remains a strong possibility that this popular antagonist could show up in future installments of the series. The initial hint is found in the opening sequence of the anime by Limp Bizkit, where Dante’s sword, Rebellion, momentarily transforms into Vergil’s famous Yamato. Furthermore, as noted by Reddit user u/Extra_Doughnut7410, further on in the opening, there appears to be a depiction of Vergil’s Judgement Cut and a demon silhouette resembling Sparda in the background, which seems too specific not to suggest that we might encounter a genuine Vergil later on.

Although director Adi Shankar suggests that this demon isn’t Sparda, it could instead be Dante’s devil trigger manifestation. If so, the quick glimpse of Judgement Cut might actually depict Vergil readying to battle Dante. This hypothesis aligns well with the idea that Netflix’s Devil May Cry series follows a younger Dante, as portrayed in the Devil May Cry 3 video game.

During that period, Vergil hadn’t been drawn into the Demon Realm, where he would meet Mundus, the Prince of Darkness, who would transform him into Nelo Angelo. Assuming the animated series adheres to the original sequence of events, it implies that Vergil was still residing in the mortal world when the story unfolds. Moreover, we’re aware that during the timeline of Devil May Cry 3, Vergil aimed to obtain the power of their shared father, Sparda.

This objective is bound to bring him face-to-face with Dante, given that Dante still possesses one-half of the Powerful Amulet essential for unlocking the gateway to the Demon Realm. Their impending meeting might mirror past events from the Devil May Cry 3 video game, or the storyline could diverge from the traditional narrative to deliver a unique ending for the brothers. The future will reveal the answer.

It’s not logical for creators to hint at Vergil’s appearance frequently in the opening scenes, only for him to appear as a fake version of himself in a brief cameo. This theory is supported by the fact that Robbie Daymond has already been confirmed as Vergil’s voice actor, alongside other main characters, suggesting a more substantial role for Vergil.

Redditors Share Opinions On Vergil’s Design

Regardless of whether Vergil reappears in the series or not, it’s significant that this glimpse is his debut in animated form as the older Sparda twin. Not surprisingly, fans had plenty of comments about Vergil’s new look. The most striking change for many viewers was the modification to Vergil’s hairstyle. Instead of the sleek style from Devil May Cry 3, his latest do has a spikier appearance. Reddit user u/CaptainHazama drew parallels between this new style and Kazuya’s hair in Tekken, while u/dark621 saw similarities with Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z.

Besides his hair, some fans also criticized the alteration of Vergil’s signature coat design from “Devil May Cry 3”. The animated Vergil’s long, blue coat was missing the intricate silver-white patterns on its front that lent it a regal appearance. Instead, it featured a more straightforward spiral pattern on the collar and shoulders in an orange-gold hue, which many fans felt didn’t suit the coat’s deep blue as well as they had hoped.

Followers like u/OkCall7730 also pointed out criticism towards the anime’s character design, stating it deviated noticeably from the original manga. However, Vergil was easily identifiable due to his distinctive color scheme. The user maintained that the style felt overly cartoonish and without his unique color palette, the character might not have been recognized.

It’s possible that the sneak peek isn’t the real final design of Vergil, as suggested by redditor u/CharacterLoan5713. If this theory holds true and the preview version of Vergil was a fake, it would be delightful news for fans who aren’t fond of the current design, indicating a potential change in the final look.
