It Ends with Us finds early box office success with US previews

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of romance films over the past few decades, I must say that the upcoming release of “It Ends with Us” has piqued my interest immensely. Having grown accustomed to the trend of romantic dramas migrating to streaming platforms, it’s refreshing to see a high-profile production like this hitting the big screen.

If you bring together a top-tier actor and one of the 21st century’s bestselling novels, chances are you’ll have a blockbuster hit, based on the U.S. previews of “It Ends with Us.”

As a devoted cinephile, I eagerly awaited the premiere of the new romance movie starring Blake Lively, adapted from Colleen Hoover’s book with the same title. On Thursday evening, the 8th of August, I was glued to my seat as it graced our US screens for the first time – and let me tell you, it has already managed to pull in a promising sum at the box office.

Based on Deadline’s report, the film “It Ends with Us” earned approximately $7 million within the U.S. on just one day, suggesting a strong start to its global cinema release and a promising opening weekend.

In the United States, preliminary estimates suggest we could see a box office revenue exceeding $30 million, surpassing anticipated blockbuster hits of 2024 such as The Fall Guy ($28.5m) and romantic film Anyone But You ($6m).

Justin Baldoni’s film, which he both directed and starred in, breaks away from the pattern of romantic movies released this year, most of which have been directly released on streaming platforms like Anne Hathaway’s “The Idea of You” and Camila Mendes’ “Upgraded.”

After the success of “Anyone but You,” which initially had a sluggish start yet managed to earn over $220 million globally, it’s clear that audiences continue to crave romantic narratives on the silver screen. In other words, I can see that there’s still a significant demand for movies driven by romance.

Discussing the significance of adapting “It Ends with Us” for the big screen, Blake Lively shared with PA her viewpoint: “I believe this is a film that needs to be produced, as an actress I rarely get the chance to portray a character who fully embodies the full range of women’s, or human experiences.”

When you face hardships like pain, trauma, darkness, or sadness, or when you exhibit qualities such as lightness, levity, love, hope, and joy, these are expressions of who you truly are.

“It’s not common to encounter a female character who is multidimensional, as complex characters, especially those with messiness, are seldom portrayed in films.”

Having been a long-time fan of both comic books and romantic dramas, I am thrilled to see that “It Ends with Us” is going head-to-head with “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” in movie theaters this weekend. As someone who has followed the careers of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds for years, I have no doubt that they will leave a lasting impact on the silver screen this summer. With their undeniable charisma and talent, coupled with the high-quality production values that these movies always bring, it’s shaping up to be an unforgettable cinematic experience. I am eagerly anticipating the box office battle between these two powerhouse franchises and can’t wait to see who will come out on top!

It Ends with Us is now in cinemas.
