It Ends With Us' Justin Baldoni Addresses Famous Line Cut From Film

As a die-hard fan of both Colleen Hoover’s novels and Justin Baldoni’s work, I must say that his new movie “It Ends With Us” has truly exceeded my expectations! It was a delight to see how he meticulously wove Easter eggs from the book into the film, giving us a glimpse into Lily and Atlas’s world that felt so familiar yet fresh.

Justin Baldoni is hoping fans will take a ride with him on the EAC.

In relation to the release of his latest movie titled “It Ends With Us” in cinemas, the director and lead actor are sharing some hidden references (Easter Eggs) they incorporated into the film, as they couldn’t fit all details from Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel due to constraints. The cast includes Blake Lively, Brandon Sklenar, Jenny Slate, and Isabela Ferrer.

In a video posted on August 23rd on Instagram, Justin elaborated that fans were particularly fond of a phrase from the book called ‘just keep swimming’, which Lily and Atlas used throughout the story, but this wasn’t included in the movie.

The well-known saying, initially used in Pixar’s 2003 movie “Finding Nemo”, is a phrase often repeated by the character Dory, played by Ellen DeGeneres. In the book, this phrase serves as an inspiring message shared between Lily (Blake) and Atlas (Brandon).

Even though that particular line didn’t appear in the movie, attentive viewers of “It Ends With Us” may notice a few subtle references to the cartoon.

If you decide to watch the film, Justin mentioned that you should take note of Lily’s bedroom, specifically her wall where there’s a poster. He didn’t disclose its subject, but you’ll spot a subtle tribute to perhaps the movie itself or a well-known saying, if you care to notice it.

In one scene, a 40-year-old character disclosed that there’s a unique stuffed toy as well. Just be cautious, as it can easily go unnoticed if you look away even briefly – “it might slip past your notice.” (Interestingly, a toy resembling a clown fish is hidden in Lily’s nursery for her newborn daughter, leading one viewer to remark on TikTok, “The movie’s attention to detail is truly remarkable!”)

Additionally, a nod to the phrase from “Finding Nemo” is made when Lily and Atlas meet for the first time at his restaurant called Root.

Justin mentioned, “Near the bathroom, you’ll find a frame hanging on the wall. If you take a closer look, you’ll notice it has an expression that resembles the one you saw earlier.”

Fortunately, many viewers have picked up on the hints ever since the movie’s release. One user even posted the restaurant scene on TikTok, highlighting a painting titled “Keep on Swimming,” and asked, “Was I the only one who missed this detail, or did everyone else too?”

In my role as the director, I ensured not only the intricate details were attended to but also prioritized giving everyone on set a chance to contribute their ideas. Particularly during sensitive scenes depicting domestic violence, I felt it was crucial for our intimacy coordinator and stunt coordinator to take charge, allowing them to expertly guide the process.

He shared with Today.com on August 9 that he didn’t want the perspective of a male gaze to intrude upon these crucial moments that should be portrayed authentically. His intention was to honor and reflect the experiences of all the women who encounter such moments daily.
