Director Jake Schreier discusses the reason behind the early demise of Taskmaster in the MCU’s Thunderbolts. In this storyline, several anti-heroes from the MCU are resurrected and eventually transition into true heroes. Characters like Yelena Belova, Alexei Shostakov, John Walker, Ava Starr, and Bucky Barnes manage to transform their public image, culminating in them becoming the New Avengers at the end of Thunderbolts. However, Antonia Dreykov, also known as Taskmaster, doesn’t share the same fate; she is killed by Ghost before the others realize that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine had orchestrated them all to eliminate each other.
As a dedicated fan, I was intrigued when I heard about director Jake Schreier discussing Taskmaster’s surprising demise in an interview with EW. In the original script for Thunderbolts*, Olga Kurylenko’s character Antonia Dreykov had a more expansive role. However, due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, Schreier found himself rethinking the narrative. To heighten the tension and stakes for the remaining characters, he decided on a swift and dramatic end for Taskmaster. After the strike ended, we were prepared to move forward with our filming, but were halted, giving us some time to reflect on the project. Upon returning to the set, post-strike, we found ourselves contemplating ways to enhance the movie. However, it seemed somewhat devoid of emotion, lacking the intensity that such characters deserved, as compared to movies that truly capture their essence, leaving viewers on edge about who might survive. Although revealing plot twists prematurely is a challenge in today’s world, we felt it necessary to introduce an element of uncertainty within the movie to maintain suspense and convey the idea that any character could potentially meet their end, emphasizing the danger they faced.
In making the choice to execute that action at the time we did, we explored numerous alternatives and gave it considerable thought. Although having Olga in the cast for a longer period would’ve been delightful, given her acting skills, we believed that introducing death earlier in the film would have had a more profound impact, making it tougher to maintain our desired tone and balance. This emotional event would have occupied a larger space that could have overshadowed what we needed to focus on – the development of the bond between Yelena and Bob. Our storyline is quite limited, and the movie heavily relies on this connection, so to preserve our intended mood and strengthen our team, it seemed more appropriate, albeit seemingly heartless, to make that event happen early on.
