After portraying Pennywise as one of his most memorable characters, Bill Skarsgård, star of “It”, initially believed he was finished with playing terrifying clowns following his role as Count Orlok in “Nosferatu”. However, during an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast (as reported by Deadline), Skarsgård expressed that he felt done with portraying monsters while filming Nosferatu. Yet, his perspective shifted when he became aware of the details surrounding the upcoming “It” prequel, titled “Welcome to Derry”.
Skarsgård expressed that he had a sense of completion with his monster roles, saying, “I felt it was time to move on.” Filming Orlok at the same time reinforced this feeling for him. He humorously added, “It seemed like the final nail in the coffin for my monster characters,” which is a play on words. As a result, he felt ready to explore new roles and, of course, the Pennywise character has also significantly shaped his image.
Then, I was utterly captivated when I caught wind of the innovative spin that producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti had devised for the It prequel.
He expressed his affection, stating that they were not just friends but felt like family to him. In fact, he is the godfather of his friend’s child. Consequently, when it came to helping his friend, he said, “Alright, let’s get him back.
Back in May 2024, it was revealed that Bill Skarsgård would once again play Pennywise for HBO’s upcoming series “It: Welcome to Derry,” scheduled to air in 2025. This show, inspired by Stephen King’s 1986 novel “It,” will function as a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 movies “It” and “It: Chapter Two.” Although specific details about the series are yet to be disclosed, Skarsgård hinted that the series and Pennywise will be quite intense. Joining Skarsgård in this production are Madeleine Stowe, Stephen Rider, Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and James Remar.
Speaking from a fan’s perspective, reprising the role of Pennywise might prove less daunting in certain aspects compared to embodying Orlok in Nosferatu. Just recently, the actor shared some insights into the grueling process of filming the final scene, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of disgustingly intense!
He stated, “I was fully encased in latex from head to toe, leaving only my eyeballs and the soles of my feet exposed. For the final scene of the movie, we filmed it 30 times without revealing the details. The scene required intense physical acting, leading to extreme exhaustion and sweating profusely. With no way for the sweat to escape, it accumulated into a massive bubble on my abdomen, resembling a growing tumor. During breaks, they had to puncture it. To add to the messiness, artificial blood, sweat, and saliva were added.
It: Welcome to Derry is expected to debut on HBO sometime this year. Nosferatu is in theaters now.
