Gwyneth Paltrow has had a prosperous career spanning many years, highlighted by her Academy Award win for her role in “Shakespeare in Love”. More recently, she’s shifted her focus towards her wellness business, Goop. Lately, she’s shared insights into the creation of their controversial vagina-scented candle and why it remains on the site despite causing a stir online.
Goop’s Vagina-scented candles have made headlines over the years, and they say any publicity is good publicity. But the origins behind this Goop product are pretty coincidental and funny. A clip from Mind Valley’s Instagram shows her speaking at the Manifesting Summit, where she revealed how that infamous product came together. In her words:
The product is remarkably intriguing. On a whim, we experimented with various scents one day, and I caught a scent that reminded me of something familiar. Initially, I was just joking, but then he suggested we create a candle out of that scent and list it on our website.
In “The Goop Lab” (a series available on Netflix), Paltrow’s professional endeavors were showcased, but the origins of the controversial vagina candle weren’t featured in any episodes. Interestingly, it was by chance that this notorious item was created. During the same panel discussion, the 52-year-old actress and entrepreneur provided additional insights about the candle, shedding light on its unexpected origin.
Initially, I assumed he was joking, responding with “Absolutely, that’s a great idea!” Little did I know, it soon appeared on his website. We caused another internet sensation, and it took quite some time for us to recover from that incident.
From a passionate admirer’s perspective, there’s no denying that the vagina-scented candle was undoubtedly one of Goop’s most talked-about projects. It wasn’t just the company; it was the buzzword on everyone’s tongue when the candle went viral.
Though Paltrow envisions eventual sale of Goop, she harbors a robust vision for the company. She clarified her reason for maintaining the popular vagina-scented candles on the platform following its virality, expressing: “I chose to keep them due to their unique appeal and strong market response.
I chose to maintain it on the platform as there’s a part of female sexuality that we often learn to feel embarrassed about, and I find this rebellious punk-rock concept appealing. Essentially, we are stunning, powerful, and can flip off any negativity thrown our way.
In my critical opinion, while Gwyneth Paltrow may have momentarily forgotten her role in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” her recollection of her work at Goop remains vividly intact. Eager to challenge societal norms and promote body positivity, she sought to utilize the viral candle as a means to destigmatize the female form. True to this mission, we’ve observed an array of candles with distinct feminine scents emerging from the Goop marketplace.
In the lineup for 2025 film releases, Oprah Winfrey is set to star in several upcoming productions, one of which is the movie “Marty Supreme” alongside Timothée Chalamet.
