Funny business, comedy can be, yet countless entertainers have mastered it. In fact, numerous beloved stand-up comedians owe their success to sharing their own amusing tales of struggles and misfortunes. Recently, Jamie Foxx shared a humorous anecdote about advising Eddie Murphy against making a comeback as a comic.
What Did Jamie Foxx Say About Telling Eddie Murphy Not To Do Stand Up Comedy Anymore?
Well, I think it’s important for us as artists to tap into our own experiences and emotions when creating comedy,” he said, “because that’s what makes it real and relatable.”
In simpler terms, Foxx believes that drawing from personal stories can add a layer of authenticity to their humor. As fans, we eagerly await the next wave of laughter these two legends will bring us.
For quite some time, I had an exclusive arrangement, yet found myself at a loss for words. What on earth could I discuss? Well, I was wealthy. I resided within my fortified estate. Once, I encountered Eddie Murphy at his residence, which coincidentally was during the production of Coming 2 America. He mentioned his intention to attempt stand-up comedy again. I responded, “You can’t.” He inquired, “Why?” I replied, “This isn’t funny. Your house is too luxurious. That peculiar aroma…” Indeed, he had a distinctive scent that filled his residence.
Indeed, a fascinating aspect that often goes unnoticed is comedians taking the stage to poke fun at life’s blessings, given their inherent difficulty in finding humor there. Comedy, in many cases, serves as a means to process hardships and confront the numerous challenges life presents, whether it’s personal struggles or broader societal issues. Laughter, in time, becomes a coping mechanism for many, offering solace even when one anticipates more difficult times ahead. If life is smooth sailing…then what is there left to laugh about?
After being absent from stand-up comedy for quite some time, Foxx has recently made a comeback, following a successful acting career spanning over two decades in films such as “Django Unchained,” the “Horrible Bosses” series, “Baby Driver,” “White House Down,” “Just Mercy,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “They Cloned Tyrone,” and lending his voice to the lead character in “Soul.” However, prior to this return, he had been dealing with a brain hemorrhage that resulted in a stroke, which was initially only publicly disclosed as a mysterious illness. This medical issue sparked concerns about Foxx’s health among fans for a while.
Consequently, he experienced a horrifying and frightening event that required not just intense medical care, but also a means to cope mentally with the ordeal. This experience became his topic on stage, eventually leading to his popular comedy special titled What Happened Was…, which is available for viewing through your Netflix subscription. Foxx went on to explain:
Initially, I asked, “What’s that scent?” He replied, “It’s the aroma of pomegranate.” My response then was, “Your knowledge of that fact tells me you’re not joking, buddy.” It was quite impressive.
It’s clear that Foxx and others don’t harbor ill intentions towards the star of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, hoping only for his continued success. However, Murphy’s life appearing “overly idyllic” remains a valid observation. If he wishes to revisit his R-rated stand-up days, he might need to delve into less comfortable topics. I’m confident that the witty man can find such material whenever he chooses.
