“It’s not even funny anymore.” Helldivers 2 players are putting the underwhelming new Warbond on blast, and I’m with them

Following a two-month interval since the last instalment of gameplay updates for Arrowhead Game Studios’ hit cooperative shooter Helldivers 2 on Windows PC and PS5, we’ve been given an official sneak peek into this month’s fresh Warbond battle pass content. To be honest, I was hoping for a bit more.

Titled “Masters of Ceremony,” The Warbond is set to release on May 15th. This upcoming content focuses on honoring the ancestors of the Helldivers who fought in previous battles. Similar to past Warbonds, this one will retail for 1,000 Super Credits, equivalent to $10 if purchased from the store. Upon acquisition, you’ll receive a new primary and secondary weapon, a grenade, a stratagem, a booster, as well as two armor sets, two capes, two player banners, an emote, and a player title. You can catch a glimpse of the trailer for it by clicking here or below.

In terms of gameplay, the R-2 Amendment marksmanship rifle, CQC-2 Saber melee weapon, and G-142 Pyrotech grenade appear to have significant contributions. The Amendment seems like a blend of the R-2124 Constitution and the R-6 Deadeye; it possesses the bayonet from the former and a scope similar to the latter. The Saber offers high melee damage, and when combined with the Ballistic Shield Backpack strategy, it can create some intense sword-and-board combat. The Pyrotech grenade disperses fire in a wide radius, making it useful for clearing out Terminid or Illuminate forces when used to torch them.

Even though these unlocks in Warbond appear stylish, I can’t help but sense that most of them are repetitive at best and pointless at worst. Frankly, I question if Helldivers 2 truly required another semi-automatic sniper rifle following the addition of the Deadeye, and although the sword serves a purpose, I struggle to understand why the Pyrotech grenade is necessary when we already possess incendiaries from the Freedom’s Flame pass.

In simpler terms, both light and medium armor sets also come with a disappointingly weak Reinforced Epaulettes feature that minimally lowers the probability of your limbs fracturing in battle; on the other hand, the Servo Assisted perk from older armors provides a 50% increase in limb durability as well as enhances the range for throwable items by 30%, making this new trait seem unnecessarily redundant.

As a tech and freedom lover like you, I must confess my excitement about the CQC-1 One True Flag. Picture yourself leading the charge against Lady Liberty’s toughest adversaries, carrying the ultimate representation of Managed Democracy! The vibe? Phenomenal, 10/10!

However, the trailer and social media descriptions are a bit hush-hush about its additional features. Is it just a melee weapon with no area-of-effect buffs or special abilities? That would be quite a bummer, turning it into more of a gag item rather than a powerful tool in Helldivers 2.

Now, let’s not forget that Helldivers 2 is known for its humor, and sometimes, that humor leans towards the absurd or silly. But receiving this weapon as part of a paid Warbond, especially one that seems bland to start with, can be quite frustrating.

Due to several factors, my enthusiasm for exploring a fresh Warbond has significantly decreased – and I’m not alone in feeling disappointed. A massive amount of comments on platforms like YouTube, Reddit, and social media are echoing the same sentiment, with many expressing dissatisfaction over the new unlocks, finding them lackluster, boring, or unnecessary.

As a researcher examining the Helldivers community feedback on warbonds, I came across this comment from one participant: “This warbond is so lackluster it’s becoming comical,” they lamented on r/Helldivers subreddit. “What on earth is happening here?” Another user concurred: “Setting aside the hype and visual appeal, this might be the least rewarding warbond thus far. So far, we’re only getting a rifle (which seems to fall between Diligence CS and Deadeye in terms of power), a melee weapon, two armors with an apparently insignificant passive ability, a grenade that probably doesn’t offer anything new compared to existing ones, and a ‘meme’ flag strategy.

Once more, everything in the passage appears top-notch — I’m quite fond of the battlefield equipment resembling trench warfare from a futuristic World War 1 era or what a Kriegsman from Warhammer: 40,000 might wear. However, the issue lies in that most of it seems more like expanding the Helldivers 2 game world rather than offering useful additions, which isn’t ideal considering the impending massive and urgent invasion by the Illuminate.

Helldivers 2 ranks high among both PC games and PS5 games, making it an excellent choice if you enjoy cooperative shooters, high-octane sci-fi action, quirky physics, and witty satire. Normally priced at around $40, you can often find it cheaper with some shopping around for deals. Currently, the most significant discount is offered by CDKeys, reducing the price by nearly $10, allowing you to purchase this explosive game for less than $31.
