As a long-time fan and supporter of British television, I can’t help but feel dismayed by ITV boss Kevin Lygo’s recent criticism towards the BBC’s decision to acquire hit US shows like Gossip Girl and Suits during the Euros 2024 coverage.
Kevin Lygo, head of ITV, has expressed his disapproval towards the BBC’s approach in securing popular American series such as Gossip Girl and Suits.
During the Euros 2024 broadcast on the BBC, Lygo confessed that he was taken aback by the appearance of promotional ads for other shows.
During ITV’s interim financial report discussion at ITV, Lygo expressed some surprise over the significant amount of time dedicated to airing repeats or previously aired American shows, which we now refer to as “pre-loved” content.
As a film enthusiast, I’m puzzled by this situation. With the BBC facing financial challenges and straining to support their own original productions such as Newsnight, it seems paradoxical to me that they’d still have the resources to acquire shows like Suits and Gossip Girl.
“I think it’s a question for them. I don’t know why they choose to do that – it seems peculiar.”
Newsnight has undergone some changes and now features fewer resources, following the BBC’s efforts to reduce expenses.
During that period, Deborah Turness, the CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs, expressed that the corporation was forced to take tough actions. She shared with BBC News, “Initially, when we began working on this announcement, I wasn’t certain if it would be financially viable for Newsnight to continue broadcasting.”
As a passionate film and TV enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news. Recently, “Suits,” the popular legal drama that saw a comeback on Netflix, piqued the interest of broadcasters once again. In an intense bidding war, BBC managed to secure the rights, making all seasons accessible to viewers on iPlayer before ITV could get their hands on it.
In addition to fresh shows such as A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and The Jetty, iPlayer offers a selection of acquired series including Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, The Dropout, and Dopesick. (This version maintains the original meaning while using more common and natural phrasing.)
ITV has obtained rights to popular American dramas including Under the Banner of Heaven, Love & Death, and One Tree Hill, as well as several others.
At the point of obtaining St Denis Medical, The Best Man: The Final Chapters, and Suits for BBC, Sue Deeks, in charge of program acquisition, expressed her enthusiasm: “These three series form an enticing and delightful lineup: the long-awaited comedy St Denis Medical; the charming, witty blend of romance and drama in The Best Man: The Final Chapters; and the sophisticated and chic legal drama Suits.”
“We couldn’t be more delighted to bring them all to BBC viewers.”
ITV’s new year sensation, Mr Bates vs The Post Office, has not only been ITV’s most-watched show in 2024 but also its biggest new drama success since the debut of Downton Abbey in 2010, surpassing its viewership records.
