ITV soaps dominate NTAs 2024 with wins for Coronation Street and Emmerdale

As a long-time devotee of British soaps, I must say this year’s National Television Awards have been nothing short of captivating. The emotional performances and heartwarming victories have left me in awe.

This year’s National Television Awards saw ITV soaps, specifically Coronation Street and Emmerdale, sweep the Serial Drama categories.

This year, Emmerdale, a popular soap opera, took home the top Serial Drama award, outperforming Corrie, Casualty, EastEnders, and Hollyoaks. Interestingly, it had previously won this award in 2022, but was narrowly defeated by EastEnders in 2023.

Accepting the accolade, Matty (stage name Ash Palmisciano) expressed gratitude: “We merely wish to express thanks to our viewers – it’s your support that keeps this show alive. We are deeply appreciative of you, and we acknowledge those who have been with us since day one.

Regardless of the circumstances in your life, know this: We’ve shared similar experiences before. Rest assured, we remain committed to delivering exceptional TV programming, sharing stories that touch your heart, and bringing you narratives that truly matter.

Simultaneously, Peter Ash clinched the Serial Drama Performance accolade, thanks to his outstanding portrayal of Paul’s heart-wrenching Coronation Street tale about his tragic demise.

During his triumphant address, Ash expressed his heartfelt gratitude: “What a truly astonishing victory! My deepest thanks go out to each and every one who cast their vote for me – the sincerity of those words comes from the very depths of my heart. What an extraordinary finale to my six-year journey on Coronation Street!

He continued: “I’d like to dedicate this to the MND (motor neurone disease) community, an absolute amazingly inspiring bunch of people. They really are warriors and all my love goes to you.”

I’m hoping folks understand that our portrayal isn’t always like the silver screen, where everything is perfect and everyone you cherish is present. Life doesn’t often work that way. There may be tears among the spectators, but that’s just a snapshot of reality.
