I’ve covered AI since the days of Bing Chat, and this is the first AI feature I consider a must-have

The video editing tool from Microsoft, Clipchamp, is set to acquire an advanced functionality for cutting videos. In the near future, this application will allow users to edit a video transcript for trimming purposes.

On Windows 11, you’ll find a pre-installed video editor known as Clipchamp. You can also access Clipchamp through its web version or on iOS devices. Unfortunately, at the moment, it isn’t compatible with Android devices.

In the year 2021, Microsoft obtained Clipchamp, and since then, they have been gradually enhancing its functionalities. This software is intended to serve as a simple video editing tool, rather than challenging established heavyweights like Adobe Premiere Pro or more advanced software.

In simpler terms, when you have certain Microsoft 365 business or educational licenses, you gain access to the professional version of Clipchamp. This version offers customizable video templates, various AI tools, and capabilities to capture both your screen and webcam for making presentations.

With Clipchamp, you can currently generate AI-created transcripts for conversations in videos. However, an upcoming feature, due for release this month, will enable you to modify the text within the transcript. Once edited, the associated segment of the video will be automatically removed.

With this feature, you can easily cut specific parts from a video without needing to handle the timeline, thereby simplifying the learning process for video editing and making it more straightforward to produce videos focused on dialogue.

In a recent post on Microsoft’s Tech Community, Anastasia Passaris unveiled this new feature and provided instructions on how it can be utilized.

  1. Open a new or existing video project in Clipchamp that contains spoken dialogue.
  2. Select the Transcript tab from the panel on the right-hand side of the editor.
  3. Select Generate transcript to start the transcription process.
  4. Highlight any text in the transcript that you’d like to remove, then select Delete. This will remove that portion of the video from the timeline.

In Clipchamp, the Captions tab has been changed to the Transcript tab. Although captioning tools have moved to another part of the application, they are still available for use.

As an analyst, I’m excited about the latest upgrade that includes timestamped AI-generated transcripts in my videos. This innovation allows me to swiftly navigate through various sections of the video. Moreover, with the addition of a new feature, I can now effortlessly eliminate irrelevant discussions and watch only the trimmed, relevant parts, enhancing my overall viewing experience.

Transcript-based editing will roll out in June 2025 to Clipchamp for work users.

Quick and easy video editing

Content becomes more inclusive and easier to understand when accompanied by transcripts and captions, as they allow individuals to both listen and read the material simultaneously. This dual method of consumption can enhance memory retention.

In this digital era dominated by social media, I find it advantageous to add captions to my content. This way, viewers can still follow along even when their device is on mute.

In the past, my job involved working in television and regularly adapting content for online platforms. Transcribing videos was quite a time-consuming task. Despite its significance, manually transcribing consumed a substantial portion of my time.

Using Clipchamp’s AI-transcribed subtitles not only saves you valuable time, but it also allows for a seamless video editing experience by offering the option to precisely cut your videos based on the transcribed text.

I’ve thoroughly examined and re-examined Clipchamp ever since it was acquired by Microsoft. It’s a robust video editing tool with features primarily focused on improving productivity. If your company or institution has a license that encompasses Clipchamp for business use, I strongly recommend giving the application a test run for creating content like tutorial videos, onboarding materials, and presentations.

Apart from the professional edition, Clipchamp offers a personal version that I utilize for compiling highlight clips of my American football team. This variant comes with some unique features, albeit it maintains its user-friendly nature.
