2021 has been an exceptional year for gaming so far, offering a diverse range of top-tier experiences. Big names like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds have dominated headlines, while lesser-known titles such as The First Berserker: Khazan and Blue Prince have also delivered high-quality content to gamers. However, one game that might have slipped under your notice is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – a captivating adventure game in the style of turn-based JRPGs, developed by the up-and-coming studio Sandfall Interactive.
2025’s distinctive RPG, Clair Obscur, is set to make a mark and will be available starting April 24th on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PS5. Before its release, you can grab the game for $44.99 on Steam (a 10% discount from its original price of $49.99). However, a better deal is available at CDKeys where it costs only $34.59. Moreover, the Deluxe Edition featuring exclusive cosmetic items for your party members is also discounted to $41.19 at CDKeys (normally priced at $59.99).
Could this be a Game of the Year contender?
Since the debut of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 during Microsoft’s 2025 Xbox Developer Direct event earlier this year, I’ve been keeping a keen interest in what appears to be one of the most intriguing games of 2025. In many ways, it resembles games like Persona or Metaphor: ReFantazio, featuring turn-based combat and a strong emphasis on coordinating combos with each party member’s unique abilities. What truly distinguishes Clair Obscur, however, is its incorporation of action game mechanics, setting it apart from other JRPGs in the genre.
In essence, Clair Obscur is a unique blend of turn-based and real-time gameplay. To get the most out of special moves, precise timing of button presses is crucial. Moreover, sharp-eyed players can aim for enemy vulnerabilities to inflict additional damage or halt certain attacks. Additionally, enemies’ attacks can be dodged or parried, with a successful parry offering an opportunity to retaliate with powerful counterattacks.

This style of gameplay takes me back to the Mario & Luigi RPGs with turn-based combat, which are among my all-time favorite games due to their innovative “Bros. Attacks” and battle designs. Therefore, I’m really excited to try out Sandfall Interactive’s first game, hoping that it lives up to its promise of being as imaginative and captivating as it appears.
I’ve been drawn into the captivating storyline and visuals of Clair Obscur; it unfolds in a hauntingly beautiful fantasy realm heavily influenced by the Baroque era of French history. A puzzling Painteress is at its heart, who annually decreases a number, causing those with matching ages to perish, marked by her brush strokes. The narrative begins when the Painteress reaches 33, and you join as Expedition 33, attempting to uncover means to halt her destructive countdown.
In summary, this game has the promise to be exceptional – potentially ranking among the top Xbox and PC games of the year, and even competing for the title of Game of the Year. It’s worth mentioning that it can be played via Xbox Game Pass, but if you’d rather own a copy, don’t miss out on the deals mentioned earlier.
