As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that Jackpot! is a rollercoaster ride of comic action and suspense that had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The film’s unique premise of a billion-dollar lottery where survival is the real prize was both intriguing and exhilarating.
Our Editor is a master of close up magic. He can take a scratch card and with just a simple rub of a coin across its surface, instantly turns it into a piece of rubbish having, once again, not won anything. The odds of winning big on any lottery are huge but in new film Jackpot! where the year 2030, sees the jackpot runs to billions and the odds of you surviving to claim it in the film are even higher. Because here if you can find and kill the winner before sunset that day then the billions are yours. It’s illustrated in the film’s opening scene with a cameo from Sean William Scott, forever trying to shake his role as Stiffler, running for his life from a marauding horde of tooled up punters and what initially could be a major role for him soon ends up being a cameo.
For Katie, played by Awkwafina, the transition to Los Angeles brings new challenges as she settles into a cramped AirBnB room managed by an unreliable actress, Shadi (Ayden Mayeri). On her very first night, Katie discovers her belongings damaged and is forced to borrow clean clothes from Shadi, unaware that a lottery ticket is tucked away in one of the garments. This digital card reveals the winner’s face, but it’s shared among all lottery participants. When Katie’s ticket luckily wins, she becomes the target of every other ticket holder who are now tracking her down. Fortunately, John Cena appears as Noel, a man operating a modest security firm with only one employee, who steps in to protect Katie and keep her alive until sunset for a small fraction of the winnings.
As a seasoned action movie enthusiast with years of watching various genres under my belt, I find myself intrigued by the plot description presented here. The narrative seems to promise a thrilling ride filled with comic action sequences, which is always a delight for me. The element of the protagonist being on the run adds an extra layer of tension and suspense that keeps viewers engaged.
Under Paul Feig’s (known for Bridesmaids) skilled direction, this action-comedy marks his return to the genre since 2015’s ‘Spy.’ In this film, the lottery-like rules prohibit firearms, making way for an emphasis on thrilling stunts, elaborate set pieces, and side-splitting humor. The main duo, Awkwafina and Cena, take center stage. Once again, Cena delivers a hilarious performance, willingly taking the brunt of jokes, particularly those poking fun at his physical appearance – a testament to his comedic versatility.
In a refreshed take on the 1963 classic ‘It’s a wild, wild, wild, wild world’, Jackpot! strikes gold with a hilarious and entertaining adventure…and for the first time, the end credits feature an outtakes reel that includes alternative takes of scenes, which are just as amusing as those seen in the finished product.
