As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with a penchant for political dramas and reality TV spectacles, I must say that “Meet the Rees-Moggs” has certainly piqued my interest. With a background steeped in the glamour of silver screens and the grit of real-world politics, I’ve seen my fair share of characters who defy conventional expectations.
Apart from holding different political opinions, Penny Mordaunt, Matt Hancock, Nadine Dorries, Ed Balls, Lembit Opik, George Galloway, Nigel Farage, Alan Johnson, and Ann Widdecombe share a unique trait: they have all served as Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom.
They’ve danced in ballrooms, attended SAS training sessions, lived in Big Brother houses, and ventured into jungles – all as part of reality TV shows. The usual explanations offered are vanity and wealth that drive them to endure these experiences. As the saying goes, “Politics is like show business for ugly people,” and it seems none of them could resist trying their hand at the genuine article.
Even so, I wasn’t expecting the Rees-Moggs to make an appearance. Jacob appears as though he hails from a time before television existed. Dressed in double-breasted suits and holding ultra-conservative beliefs, he delighted in being known as “the MP from the 18th century”. He admits that he initially thought it was a joke when he received the first letter inviting him to allow cameras into his personal residences.
However, it was no mere jest. The 55-year-old ex-Conservative cabinet minister has landed the major catch, surpassing all past British political attention-seekers. He, his wife, their six children, and household staff won’t have to perform or consume kangaroo meals. Instead, they can simply be themselves in a five-part series reminiscent of the Kardashians.
Rees-Mogg has had a knack for grabbing the spotlight since he was young. At 12 years old, he was caught on camera, suited up and discussing his stock holdings, expressing ambitions to become both a millionaire and prime minister. During his first bid for Parliament, he generated widespread media attention, even employing his nanny to campaign on his behalf. The tenacious Veronica Crook continues to be part of the family’s team.
Sir Keir Starmer takes great care to shield his children from being publicly identified. Jacob Rees-Mogg argues that it’s pointless to conceal his surname since it is uniquely recognizable. His children and their mother, Helena de Chair (who inherited an estimated £45 million), have become targets of hate mail and online abuse on his social media platforms. In the series, both they and other household staff such as the butler, nanny, and maids stand up for themselves, just like the Starmer family. The series also features humorous moments, like when the staff iron Jacob’s starched underwear with a suggestive comment, “He likes it quite stiff, doesn’t he?
The Rees-Moggs, with their two luxury homes in Somerset and London, as well as two classic Bentleys, stand apart from the average population. One may wonder what reason they might have to display their wealth on television. Jacob candidly explains, “I find amusement in provoking others.
Besides being reality TV politicians, they share another trait – most of them were former politicians who lost their initial political positions. The Rees-Mogg team benefited from scheduling their show during the surprise general election last summer, as it provided an extra layer of drama when Jacob lost his parliamentary seat.
Despite having a presenting job at GB News, he’s not truly unemployed in the traditional sense, as he expresses his desire for a political resurgence. However, many believe his TV gig is merely a stepping stone and consider this assumption to be misguided or unrealistic.
As a devoted admirer, I’ve noticed that George Galloway’s victories in by-elections haven’t managed to maintain their momentum. On the other hand, Nigel Farage MP, despite his unconventional antics like baring it all in the Australian wilderness, remains on the outskirts of the political scene. He openly acknowledged that the reported £1.5 million fee was the largest payment he’s ever received in his career.
Donald Trump is often seen as the standard others aspire to follow, but this perspective is misguided. Before embarking on his presidential campaign, Trump was already renowned for his role in reality TV, particularly “The Apprentice,” which catapulted him into public prominence. Trump stands out in numerous ways, and if it were not for him, Lord Sugar might have occupied Number 10 instead. The Rees-Moggs are entertaining, but viewers should not anticipate any significant political returns from Jacob Rees-Mogg beyond perhaps a second season.
