The report, initially broken by Screen Daily, follows the announcement that established producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson are set to relinquish their roles in the James Bond series. This decision stems from a fresh partnership between Amazon MGM Studios and the producers, which grants Amazon control over the James Bond franchise’s intellectual property rights.

Broccoli and Wilson will continue as joint owners of the franchise together with Amazon, however, Amazon’s film studio (Amazon MGM) will acquire creative control. McWilliams announced her retirement from casting before this change in creative rights occurred.

In 1981, McWilliams started her work as a casting director for the Bond film “For Your Eyes Only,” where she collaborated with Maude Spector. From then until the release of “No Time to Die” in 2021, she was responsible for casting every single film in the entire Bond franchise.

During this period, she selected three actors who portrayed Bond, namely Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig. Additionally, she has been involved in other film productions, including Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life from 1983 and Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool in the year 2017.

McWilliams shared with Screen Daily, “I’ve retired from casting roles and am now focusing on different film projects.

She conveyed her regret at the conclusion of this period, given Broccoli and Wilson relinquishing creative oversight of the franchise. However, she made it clear that she completely comprehends the reasons behind this decision.

Before Amazon took over MGM, Barbara and Michael had a productive partnership with the studio, maintaining the authority to make the final decisions, as she stated. The production of a Bond film typically consumes about two years from their lives, leaving minimal room for other commitments.

With Michael’s retirement, the workload seemed too heavy for Barbara to handle on her own. Given her numerous other passions, particularly her theater endeavors, she found it challenging to take on everything by herself.

McWilliams expressed that examining Amazon’s past cinematic Bond films doesn’t instill much anticipation in him about the series’ future. Furthermore, he warned that if they tamper with the core aspects of Bond, they could potentially lose a large number of fans.

According to McWilliams, Barbara Broccoli strongly advocated for this individual. She had a clear desire for him right from the start, but convincing others of his suitability was the challenge.
