James Cameron Addresses Possible Return to Alien Franchise

James Cameron Addresses Possible Return to Alien Franchise

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the current resurgence of the Alien franchise is nothing short of exhilarating. From Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus to Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth, it seems like we’re in for a wild ride! However, when it comes to the return of James Cameron, it looks like fans might need to temper their expectations.

Currently, the Alien series is doing well, with Fede Alvarez’s latest movie, Alien: Romulus, offering a new perspective on the classic science fiction story, exciting fans. Moreover, another installment of Alien, Noah Hawley’s TV show titled Alien: Earth, is set to air in 2025. The series looks promising at this point, but it appears that filmmaker James Cameron might not be rejoining the franchise again. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Cameron, who wrote and directed 1986’s Aliens, stated that while he doesn’t completely rule out returning to the franchise, it’s unlikely to happen.

Cameron mentioned that the franchise is heavily used and developed at this stage. He didn’t completely rule out future possibilities but emphasized that there are 23 other projects he’s working on before considering this hypothetical one. Given his age approaching 70, it seems unlikely to happen. At some point, you have to choose which battles to engage in. I hope you understand what I mean.

Although Cameron initially had no intention of rejoining the Alien series, he still expressed praise for Alien: Romulus, but clarified that he did not actively contribute to the production, despite having watched the opening scene and offering some guidance.

He admitted, “I didn’t contribute much.” He explained, “I knew Fede, the director, and his writing partner approached me quite early on with, ‘Do you have any thoughts?’ However, they already had numerous ideas. They just seemed to want a sort of spiritual journey or something similar. That was long ago, after which they wrote their script without my involvement.”

He went on to say, “Approximately six months ago, he showed me a preliminary version of the movie. I provided him with feedback for about an hour. I want to make it clear that I claim no credit at all. If the film is exceptional, I don’t wish to take any credit; if it’s lackluster, it’s not my doing! Honestly, it’s his project, so acknowledgment should go where it’s deserved, and from what I hear, it seems promising.”

What is Alien: Romulus About?

The upcoming sci-fi movie titled “Alien: Romulus” is being marketed as a spinoff rather than a direct follow-up to the “Alien” series. In this film, a team of young space explorers will encounter the most dreadful life form in the cosmos. Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu star in “Alien: Romulus,” which is directed by Fede Alvarez from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues. The characters were initially developed by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett.
