James Corden calls 5-year Gavin & Stacey finale wait “a lesson in patience”

As a longtime fan of Gavin & Stacey, I can’t help but appreciate the wisdom and patience that James Corden and the entire team have demonstrated throughout these years. In today’s fast-paced world where instant gratification is the norm, it’s refreshing to see a show that takes its time, weaving a narrative that resonates deeply with its audience.

James Corden expressed his hope that the time spent perfecting the final episode of Gavin & Stacey would serve as a reminder about the value of patience, not just for fans but also for those within the entertainment industry.

For five years now, the cherished sitcom has been absent from our screens since its 2019 reunion episode, only to return with its final chapter. This long hiatus has left viewers gripped in anticipation following a mind-blowing cliffhanger centering around Smithy (Corden) and Nessa (Ruth Jones).

The excitement is reaching its peak since we’re just days away from unveiling the long-awaited responses from the audience, and Corden emphasizes how this series has managed to stand against a world that’s more and more reliant on immediate satisfaction.

Yesterday at a press event, the series co-creator posed this question: “Over the past several months, there’s been much discussion on what factors might have contributed to the growing popularity of our show?

“And the more I’ve thought about it, I sort of wonder if it’s actually a lesson in patience.”

Further along, Corden stated: “Nowadays, it seems like we’re often advised, especially through media or when we consume things, to focus on content, audiences, and swiftness. We’ve come to believe that speed is the ultimate key factor in every activity.

Today’s youth are consuming content at twice the original intended pace. It’s emphasized that speed is crucial. However, consider a series that concluded 15 years ago, took an additional 10 years to continue its narrative for another hour, and then waited another five years before bringing it to a close.

He suggested: “Perhaps the takeaway for everyone – whether you’re analyzing TV, discussing it, or even creating it – is that perhaps persistence, time, and dedication could be the key to ensuring content has lasting appeal beyond the screen of our mobile devices.

In 2019, the Gavin & Stacey reunion special garnered unprecedented ratings, boasting over 17 million viewers. Given the excitement surrounding its finale, it’s plausible that this episode might equal or even surpass those numbers.

And if it lives up to the lofty expectations of fans, it will certainly have been worth the wait.

All original members of Gavin & Stacey, such as the show’s creators James Corden and Ruth Jones, along with Mathew Horne, Joanna Page, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb, Rob Brydon, and Melanie Walters, are back for this special episode.
