James Corden Wanted Smithy to End Up with Sonia?

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Gavin & Stacey finale.*

In the Gavin & Stacey series finale on Christmas Day, it culminated with a joyful conclusion as Smithy ultimately chose to wed Nessa, cancelling his marriage to Sonia mid-ceremony.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I find myself captivated by the thoughts of Robert Wilfort, a talented actor known for his role in Gavin & Stacey. It seems James Corden, one of the show’s creators, mused about an alternate universe where Smithy’s story might have unfolded quite differently from his joyful ending we all know and love.

Sonia, speaking further about the character, mentioned, “Yes, there’s an entirely different realm she simply doesn’t fit in or adapt to.

On Christmas Day, the finale of Gavin & Stacey brought a mix of sweetness and sadness for fans: not only did they get to reconnect with their beloved TV family after five years apart, but this reunion also signified their farewell.

In the recent reflection documentary Gavin & Stacey: A Final Goodbye, creators James Corden and Ruth Jones disclosed the reason behind ending the series, stating that it was impossible to further depict the romantic relationship between characters Smithy and Nessa on-screen.

In one of our initial Christmas specials, when Dave proposed and Smithy responded with “Don’t marry him”, it seemed as if the fate of Smithy and Nessa was sealed, according to Corden.

In the final scene, he remarks, “It’s imperfect and chaotic because, well, we are.

Jones commented: “After Smithy and Nessa paired up, it seems that’s where their story ends, as we’ll never truly witness them cohabiting.

In the midst of their conversation, Corden interjected with, “Oh dear, that would be unfortunate,” to which Jones countered with, “Noticing Smithy take out the trash…”.

Corden added: “No, it just won’t work.”
