James Earl Jones dies, aged 93 – George Lucas pays tribute to iconic voice of Darth Vader

As a longtime admirer and fervent supporter of James Earl Jones’s illustrious career, I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing. Born in Mississippi, he rose to international acclaim through his remarkable talent and unparalleled ability to bring characters to life on stage and screen.

Legendary actor James Earl Jones, most famed for lending his extraordinary voice to characters such as Mufasa in The Lion King and various roles across the Star Wars saga, passed away at the venerable age of 93.

According to Barry McPherson, Jones’s representative, it was confirmed that Jones passed away early on Monday morning, with his loved ones by his side.

Born in Mississippi during January 1931, Jones kick-started his acting journey on the stage. He gained recognition through his remarkable portrayals of characters in Shakespearean plays.

Later on, he first appeared on the big screen in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, marking his initial film appearance. However, it was in 1977 that he became widely recognized for providing the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars, a role that significantly boosted his fame.

Initially, he viewed his position as a task related to special effects, was paid just $9,000 for his contribution to the initial movie, and adamantly asserted that he wasn’t given credit for his acting skills.

He later reconsidered, and went on to play the role in a number of other movies in the franchise.

Throughout his acting career, he appeared in various films such as Field of Dreams, Coming to America, and Conan the Barbarian. He also lent his voice to Mufasa in both the initial release and the 2019 reinterpretation of The Lion King.

On TV, he appeared in The Simpsons, Sesame Street and Roots: The Next Generation.

Throughout his illustrious career, he garnered three Tony Awards, two Emmys, a Grammy, and in 2011, an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement. In 1971, he was the second African American actor to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.

Thank you for everything, James.

Notable figures from various entertainment sectors swiftly expressed their tribute towards Jones upon hearing about his demise. George Lucas, the mastermind behind Star Wars, stated in a release: “James was an exceptional actor, possessing a truly unique voice, both in art and soul. For almost half a century, he embodied Darth Vader, yet the real secret lies in the fact that he was a genuinely kind-hearted individual.

He infused richness, honesty, and significance into every character he played, with one of the most significant roles being a loving husband to the late Ceci and father to Flynn. Many will deeply miss James – not just his friends, but also his admirers.

Currently serving as Lucasfilm’s president since 2012, Kathleen Kennedy expressed: “James Earl Jones is undeniably one of the most multifaceted and gifted actors in existence today, boasting a legendary portfolio that spans movies, theater, and TV.

His deep, ominous voice used for Darth Vader has become a cherished part of film history among fans, recognized as one of the finest portrayals of a cinematic villain. On-screen, he was powerful and commanding; off-screen, he was warm and personable. His absence will be deeply felt.

Mark Hamill, portraying Luke Skywalker, the son of Darth Vader from the Star Wars saga, expressed his sorrow with a tweet that read “#RIP dad”.

Actor George Takei shared on platform X: “A remarkable soul with a powerful, one-of-a-kind voice has departed. James Earl Jones is no longer with us and has returned to the realm beyond our reach. We are all diminished by his absence, and we grieve his passing while celebrating the vast legacy of his work.

In a post on X, Colman Domingo expressed gratitude to James Earl Jones, saying “Thank you so much, dear James Earl Jones. A true master of our profession. We have all benefited from standing on your shoulders. Now, rest. You’ve given us your very best.

“Sending love to his family, friends and countless fans in all the galaxies, far, far away.”

Furthermore, Viola Davis shared a video on Instagram with this caption: “Wow! What an extraordinary LIFE filled with INSPIRING Achievement!!!

You truly embodied excellence… your gravitas, courage, perspiration, power, and vulnerability were all on full display. Every character you portrayed was awe-inspiring and heroic. It was an honor to have crossed paths with you, sir. It’s a privilege that you graced this world with your artistry.
