James Gunn Already Knows Which DCU Film He's Writing After Superman

As a long-time gamer and avid fan of superhero movies, I’m thrilled to hear that James Gunn has already got his next writing project lined up at DC Studios, despite being fully engrossed in the production of “Superman.” His cryptic comment about it being a “distant corner” of his brain suggests that it might not be related to the Man of Steel just yet.

As a gamer, I can relate to the focus and dedication required for completing a major project. With Superman still in production, I, James Gunn, am fully immersed in bringing this film to life. Yet, even as I navigate through the challenges of principal photography, my mind occasionally wanders to what lies ahead. However, I choose to keep those thoughts at bay, giving my undivided attention to Superman’s success. As the new head of DC Studios, I was brought on board in 2022, and with the animated series Creature Commandos set as our first release, I’m excited about what comes next – but for now, it’s all about Superman.

During a conversation with fans on Threads last night, Gunn revealed some intriguing but ambiguous updates. He disclosed that “several animated initiatives” have been given the go-ahead at DC Studios. When inquired if he was aware of his next film project, he confirmed yes.

“Mm-hmm,” Gunn replied, fully engaged in our current project. Elsewhere in his mind, that thought lingered.

In simpler terms, this passage implies that what follows next from Gunn may not be an approved project or a continuation of the “Superman” story as we know it. However, this is just speculation and there’s always a possibility that Gunn might surprise us with something different.

In this adaptation of “Superman,” David Corenswet portrays the Man of Steel, with Rachel Brosnahan playing the role of intrepid journalist Lois Lane. Although plot details are scarce, we do know that this Superman has established himself as Earth’s protector and can rely on a support system of friends and allies.

Gunn is assembling a team of experienced collaborators for the project. Henry Braham, known for his work on “The Suicide Squad” and “Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3,” will serve as cinematographer. Production designer Beth Mickle, who has worked on “The Suicide Squad” and “Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3,” is on board. Judianna Makovsky, costume designer for “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Avengers: Endgame,” will be responsible for costumes. David Scott, art director of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” is also part of the team. John Papsidera, casting director of “Yellowstone” and “Oppenheimer,” will oversee casting.
