James Gunn Celebrates Superman Anniversary With New Look (and Fans Are Excited)

James Gunn, director of Superman, recently unveiled a fresh promotional snapshot from the movie, intended to stir excitement among DC fans ahead of its July premiere. The newly released image portrays actor David Corenswet as Superman standing in snow, with only his red boots, a sliver of his blue leggings, and a bit of his cape fluttering in the wind visible. Gunn labeled the picture not just a new Superman sneak peek but also a significant anniversary milestone.

Exactly one year ago today, it was Longyearbyen, Svalbard. In a flash, hurtling towards July 11, 2025. #Speedy as a speeding bullet, that’s Gunn!

Longyearbyen, a town located within Svalbard, Norway, served as the real-world setting for Superman’s Fortress of Solitude in director James Gunn’s production. Exactly one year ago, or close to that date, Gunn, Corenswet, and their crew were at this icy location – marking the beginning of the filming process for Superman on February 29th, 2024, which coincidentally was also a Leap Year and Superman’s birthday as depicted in DC Comics. Even though we have to wait four years for the next official anniversary of filming Superman, February 28th can be used instead.

Last year’s hard work by Gunn in the snow has definitely proven worthwhile this year. The Superman teaser trailer broke records for DC Studios and Warner Bros., with most of its footage depicting Corenswet’s Superman, bruised and battered, crashing into the snow, with only his super-dog Krypto nearby to hear Clark Kent/Kal-El calling for help. A later TV spot hinted at a healthier, happier Superman soaring through that icy landscape. Could this new teaser image be hinting at the exhilarating snowy flight scene? That would be just the kind of fun Easter egg that James Gunn enjoys including.

As a passionate movie enthusiast who’s eagerly anticipating the new era of DC Universe films, I can’t help but feel a sense of tension surrounding the upcoming “Superman” project. Last week, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the masterminds behind DC Studios, hosted an exclusive event for select press and influential voices in the industry, shedding light on their ambitious plans for the future of the DC Universe.

While the event was well-orchestrated and smartly executed, it’s hard not to notice a subtle shift from the original slate they unveiled back in 2024. One notable change is the delay or potential reconsideration of “The Authority,” a project directly linked to “Superman” and initially proposed as the next significant chapter in the DC Universe saga.

Between the lines, it seems that “Superman” might find itself in a “wait-and-see” position within the studio’s plans, with other major projects for the DCU taking precedence for now. It’s an interesting development, and I’m eager to see how this unfolds in the coming months.

For this purpose, Gunn is planning a significant marketing campaign for the upcoming release of Superman. Pictures like the one shown are an effective method to maintain fan excitement and broaden the buzz, without incurring the high costs typically associated with traditional advertising. All these Gunn AMA sessions and online discussions have been building up to this point – it’s time for launch!

Superman has a release date of Juy 11th.
