With his initial lineup of projects, he’s opting for simplicity, ensuring viewers won’t require a complex timeline to follow along. In a recent Threads post, the writer/director and co-CEO of DC Studios has revealed the six projects that will shape the DC Universe up until 2026, even confirming an unexpected sequence for two of these projects.
Initially, when Gunn unveiled the DCU slate a few years back, he mentioned ten projects as the initial “chapter” of DC storytelling. Since then, some projects have been postponed, others have been added, and it’s become evident that they won’t all be released at the pace some fans initially expected. However, Gunn has consistently emphasized that the best way to follow the DCU projects is by watching them in the order of their release.
Gunn stated that the upcoming DC Universe content on HBO Max won’t require a timeline since it will be presented in a clear, chronological order. He also disclosed that the Lanterns series will debut before the release of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
At present, new releases such as “Creature Commandos”, “Superman”, “Peacemaker”, “Lanterns”, and “Supergirl” are similar to how they appear in movies and TV shows – with the exception that some of these may include flashbacks.
‘Lanterns’ Will Likely Be Released Early in 2026
It appears that Lanterns are expected to arrive by early 2026, undoubtedly prior to June, as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to premiere in theaters as the second installment in the DC Universe film series.
As a movie enthusiast, it’s not hard to see that the timeline is quite intriguing. With “Creature Commandos” hitting screens in December 2024, followed by “Superman” in July and “Peacemaker” Season 2 on Max on August 21, 2025, it seems unlikely for director Gunn to take a long break between projects. Therefore, it’s reasonable to expect that “Lanterns” might be premiering sometime during the later winter or early spring of 2025, bridging the gap to “Supergirl’s” release on June 26, 2026.
Filming for the movie titled “Lanterns” commenced last month, and it appears that the team is making good progress. Around early May, main actor Jason Ritter provided a hint about the project and its timeline. He stated:
So far, we’ve completed four episodes and are now preparing to film episodes three and four. We’re mixing things up a bit by shooting them out of sequence, but the experience has been incredibly enjoyable and the script is both engaging and entertaining.
The “Lanterns” television series is noted for its partnership-style dynamic among the main characters. Though specifics about the show remain scarce, many fans are intrigued by talks of its unique atmosphere and mood. Some have expressed concern that the action seems confined to an Earth-bound narrative, which, given the comics’ interstellar Green Lanterns, has left some feeling let down. However, there is still a substantial number eagerly anticipating how this series will breathe new life into the “Green Lantern” brand for a fresh audience.
