James Gunn Confirms His Creature Commandos Appearance Is Not DC Canon

As a die-hard DC fan with years of comics and movies under my belt, I must say that the first two episodes of Creature Commandos have truly lived up to expectations. It’s a fantastic start for the DCU, offering an engaging storyline while subtly tying into the larger cinematic universe.

The initial installments of “Creature Commandos” set an impressive tone for the DC Universe, captivating viewers with a compelling narrative while hinting at a broader cinematic universe. Despite only having two episodes out of seven released so far, the positive feedback and enthusiastic audience response have positioned this animated series as a significant triumph for DC Studios, generating excitement for “Superman”. However, some viewers express displeasure over the appearance of a cartoon version of James Gunn within “Creature Commandos”, interpreting it as him inserting himself into the DC Universe’s continuity. Rest assured, as Gunn clarified, this is not the intended interpretation.

In the opening sequence of Creature Commandos, an animated depiction of Gunn makes an appearance. Although he doesn’t play a role in the series narrative, Gunn is granted brief introductory credits similar to the other major characters. As showrunner Dean Lorey explained to IGN, this was the intention – to provide Gunn with a small animated moment, as he’s considered more than just a character behind the scenes. In Lorey’s words, “James had a credit, and we were trying to decide how to give all the characters brief moments, so we thought, ‘James is a character too, let’s give him something.’

Despite the tribute stirring emotions in Gunn, he remained unaware of the details throughout the project, which made seeing the opening credits a surprising revelation for DC Studios’ co-head. Speaking about his Creature Commandos cameo, Gunn clarified, “That’s not part of the established storyline,” before expressing his surprise and flattery, saying, “I was taken aback, my pride swelled, and I thought, ‘Oh, my goodness. I hope people don’t think I instructed him to create…’

According to Lorey, Gunn never requested to be transformed into an animated character. Instead, the whole team was hesitant about his response. To put it simply, Lorey stated, “He didn’t ask for it, and we were excited to showcase it, but at the same time, we were a bit nervous when presenting it.

What’s Creature Commandos About?

The series titled “Creature Commandos” focuses on Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo, who leads Task Force M – a group of monstrous inmates constructed by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) once human prisoner operations for A.R.G.U.S. were halted by Congress. Interestingly, the narrative references events from Season 1 of “Peacemaker” and “The Suicide Squad”, making these projects by James Gunn semi-canonical within the DC Universe. This strategic move makes the DC Universe feel more realistic with superheroes no longer being a rarity, mirroring the idea that “Superman” will be set years after Clark Kent initially put on his suit.

In each episode of Creature Commandos, a standalone tale unfolds, yet it also sets the stage for future Superman and DCU adventures. For example, after voicing Rick Flag Sr., Grillo will reprise his role as the physical character in both Season 2 of Superman and Peacemaker. As for whether other Creature Commandos characters will make it through the series, that remains to be seen; however, Gunn has the means to bring live-action versions of all members to life.

New episodes of Creature Commandos hit MAX every Thursday until January 9, 2025.
