As a lifelong fan of the Dark Knight, I can hardly contain my excitement as James Gunn and Peter Safran breathe new life into the DC Universe. The prospect of Robert Pattinson’s Batman gracing the silver screen once again, this time within the continuity of the DCU, is nothing short of a dream come true.
Riddle me this: I am vengeance. I am the night. My enemy is a bird who cannot fly, yet our franchise is taking flight. Who am I? If you guessed Robert Pattinson’s Batman, you would be correct — but instead of Matt Reeves’ Epic Crime Saga, The Batman movie might have launched the DC Universe. As the heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran are shepherding the just-relaunched DCU, which counts the animated Creature Commandos and the upcoming Superman movie and Peacemaker season 2 as canon.
While DC Studios produced HBO’s The Penguin with Reeves — as well as the director’s upcoming sequel, The Batman Part II — those projects are Elseworlds, the label used for anything set outside of Gunn and Safran’s new DCU continuity.
On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn responded by saying, “I’ve thought about it,” when asked if he’s pondered over incorporating Pattinson’s Batman into the DCU. “I mull over a lot of things and we discuss many possibilities.
Gunn emphasized that it would be wise to take note of this, as he confirmed that DC Studios is dedicated to both Elseworlds tales and those within the DC Universe.
James Gunn expresses his desire to explore alternate narratives for DC characters, stating, “We aim to craft tales where Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman exhibit significant differences from their usual personas.” He further explains that he appreciates the variety of Elseworlds stories in DC comics, which often present these characters in unique ways. He believes this diversity is a key aspect of the enjoyment of reading DC comics, citing Watchmen as an example of a story told outside the standard continuity of DC Comics. Essentially, Gunn wishes to use the Elseworlds concept to tell distinct stories about DC characters.
Reeves’ “The Batman” Epic Crime Story encompasses “The Batman”, “The Penguin”, along with the prequel comic “The Riddler: Year One”, penned by Paul Dano. Both DC and HBO have been working on various television series within this universe, such as the abandoned “Gotham PD” and “Arkham Asylum”. In a different project, the Batman and Robin from the DC Universe will make their appearance in the movie “The Brave and the Bold”, directed by Andy Muschietti who’s known for directing “The Flash”.
The DCU version of Batman will have progressed significantly in his career as a vigilante: The story of Brave and the Bold is an extraordinary tale that unfolds as Bruce Wayne, our caped crusader, discovers he has a son. This son, Damian Wayne, was raised to be an assassin for eight to ten years before being reunited with his father. In 2023, James Gunn described him as his favorite Robin and the story is inspired by the Grant Morrison comic run, one of Gunn’s favorite Batman stories. Safran hinted that Brave and the Bold will not only focus on Damian Wayne but also other members of the extended Bat-Family who have been underrepresented in Batman films.
In a conversation on Threads, Gunn clarified that all productions falling under the realm of DC films, television, and video games – encompassing both the DC Universe and Elseworlds – come under our control. This extends to upcoming spin-offs from the Batman universe as well as the Black Superman movie by Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams, which has been in development since before Gunn and Safran assumed their roles at DC Studios (previously known as DC Films).
In the lineup of DC Studios projects within the DC Universe, you’ll find the HBO series titled “Lanterns,” the Max series named “Waller” and “Booster Gold,” along with the films such as “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” “Swamp Thing,” “The Authority,” and “The Brave and the Bold.” Additionally, both Gunn and Reeves are producing an animated feature, titled “Dynamic Duo,” which focuses on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd (the Robins) from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. However, it’s uncertain if this project falls under DCU canon or Elseworlds.
