James Gunn Debunks DCU Batman & Teen Titans Rumors: “Complete B.S.”

In February, two years since James Gunn and Peter Safran initially unveiled the first chapter of their new DC Universe with ten film and TV projects, the CEOs of DC Studios provided updates on their roster featuring Superman, Supergirl, Lanterns, and season 2 of Peacemaker. During this briefing, Gunn and Safran shared that some of the previously announced projects, such as the HBO Max series Waller and live-action features Swamp Thing and The Authority, were on hold. They also mentioned they had no immediate plans to make a Clayface movie before reviewing Mike Flanagan’s screenplay.

Additionally, it has been verified that the team also endorsed the news that Ana Nogueira, known for her work on Supergirl, is penning a live-action Teen Titans film (a separate project not initially announced), and that Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock movie was in development, although it has since been put on hold. In the time period following this announcement, Gunn addressed various rumors circulating around the dynamic DC Universe lineup of projects via social media, clarifying questions about the casting for the DCU Batman and Teen Titans, the progress on Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II script, and other related topics.

Initially, Gunn refuted a rumor spreading across TikTok and Twitter about Teen Titans’ casting this fall. He clearly declared it as nonsense on Threads. Previously, Gunn has mentioned that the casting for DC Studios projects will only commence once the screenplay and director have been finalized.

As of February, the definitive update on the Teen Titans project was that the script wasn’t finalized yet, according to Safran. Gunn, on numerous occasions, has made it clear that no production will commence without a polished script. Back then, Gunn expressed that Ana had submitted an exceptional draft for us, but she’s still working on it, and it’s definitely not the final version.

Regarding speculations about the selection of the actor portraying DCU’s Batman, Gunn clarified that any rumors suggesting he is currently casting a new Batman are false. Additionally, he stated that there was no truth to the claim that Reeves was supposed to submit his ‘Batman 2’ script by Memorial Day, emphasizing that it was also not accurate and no one anticipated it would be done then.

In February, Gunn admitted that the journey for “The Suicide Squad” and its spinoff series “Peacemaker,” starring Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, has been a rocky one on HBO Max. Christal Henry, who worked on “Watchmen” at HBO and is part of the DCU writers’ room, is penning the series alongside Jeremy Carver, known for his work on “Doom Patrol.” During a recent meeting, Safran stated that they’ve attempted to finalize it but haven’t managed to do so yet.

Gunn clarified that the project known as “Waller” is still under development and dismissed a rumor suggesting it’s being transformed into “Checkmate.” Contrary to what some may have heard, the original 2006 “Checkmate” series by Greg Rucka and Jesus Saiz featured Amanda Waller in the role of the “White Queen,” working alongside Green Lantern Alan Scott’s “White King,” with Michael Holt/Mister Terrific serving as his Bishop in this covert organization.

Previously, Gunn hinted that he’s discussed possible roles in the DC Universe with his Guardians of the Galaxy co-stars, without revealing specific names. Already cast for future appearances is Michael Rooker, who played Yondu in the Guardians films and Savant in The Suicide Squad (2021), as the Red St. Wild Eagly hunter in Peacemaker season 2. Similarly, Nathan Fillion, who had minor roles in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), is set to play the Green Lantern character Guy Gardner in Superman, Peacemaker season 2, and HBO’s Lanterns.
