James Gunn Debunks Rumor That Justice League Movie Would Adapt Fan-Favorite Storyline

As a lifelong DC fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for what James Gunn is cooking up next at DC Studios. Having grown up reading classics like New Frontier and marveling at its timeless storytelling and iconic art, it’s truly heartening to see Gunn pay homage to such a beloved tale while also forging his unique path with the upcoming Superman film.

James Gunn has cleared up a number of rumors since his time with DC first began, and he recently cleared up another rumor that had picked up some steam. The rumor was courtesy of everythingdcu, and the rumor stated that Gunn was set to write and direct a Justice League movie, which would be pretty big news in and of itself. The kicker was that the project would be a modern adaptation of the beloved New Frontier, so you can see why fans started buzzing with the possibilities. Gunn shot down the rumor though when Riccardo Caffari asked him about it on Threads, with Gunn writing “Nope sorry. No truth to this whatsoever.” Gunn also added, “That said I love New Frontier and its magical alternate history is a big influence on DC Studios.” You can view the post here.

One of DC’s timeless tales, “DC The New Frontier,” unfolds in the 1950s, when Cold War attitudes were starting to affect superheroes. This outstanding series is penned by Darwyn Cooke and Dave Stewart, and it introduces a fresh generation of heroes such as Green Lantern, Black Canary, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Martian Manhunter.

The comic series New Frontier showcases the unique aspects of the Silver Age and weaves a contemporary and richly character-driven story across six issues. Notably, it was also brilliantly adapted into an animated version in 2008, featuring stars such as David Boreanaz, Lucy Lawless, Kyle MacLachlan, Brooke Shields, Kyra Sedgwick, Jeremy Sisto, Miguel Ferrer, John Heard, and Neil Patrick Harris, who brought DC’s iconic characters to vibrant life.

Although it’s currently not planned for Gunn to helm a New Frontier movie, he is set to direct the eagerly awaited Superman film scheduled for next year. Notably, Superman will serve as the inaugural feature film in the DC Studios universe, effectively marking its official commencement with the release of Creature Commandos as the initial offering.

In a statement, Gunn announced that he will be directing Superman: Legacy, set for release on July 11, 2025. This revelation came after a conversation with his brother, which led to him taking the role. “Apparently, when he saw the release date, my brother Matt started crying,” Gunn wrote. “When I asked why, he said it was because the release date coincided with our father’s birthday.

About three years back, I sadly lost my father. He was more than just a dad to me; he was my closest friend. As a child, he might not have fully grasped me, but his support for my passion for comics and cinema played an instrumental role in shaping who I am today, and it’s this very passion that has led me to work on the movie I’m making now, with him always by my side in spirit.

Gunn stated that reaching this point has been quite a journey for him. He was once given the chance to play Superman, but at the time he declined because he couldn’t find an approach that felt distinctive, engaging, and emotionally resonant for such an iconic character. Approximately a year ago, however, he discovered a possible angle, one that primarily focused on Superman’s heritage – exploring how his noble Kryptonian background and his Kansas farming upbringing shape who he is and the decisions he makes.

As a die-hard DC fan, I’ve got to say, I can hardly contain my excitement for the fresh wave of movies and shows that DC’s new universe has in store!
