James Gunn Defends DC Studios’ Focus on “Niche” Characters (and He’s Right)

As a seasoned film enthusiast who’s witnessed the transformation of niche characters into box office sensations, I find myself thoroughly excited about James Gunn‘s approach to DC Studios. Having lived through the rise of Guardians of the Galaxy from obscurity to household names under Gunn’s direction, I can see the potential for similar success with lesser-known DC characters like Swamp Thing and Sgt. Rock.

James Gunn, a co-head at DC Studios, has justified his approach to highlighting less mainstream DC characters as he works on a series of films and television shows. In response to a critique on social media forum Threads, Gunn defended his creative choices, including the potential leading roles for characters like Sgt. Rock and Swamp Thing. Gunn argued that these lesser-known characters are equally worthy of attention alongside DC’s popular characters.

Gunn posted: “Don’t isolate Swamp Thing in the back. This is a project we’ve already announced that’s in development, and he’s one of the most renowned characters with an impressive history not just in comics but also in film and TV series. There are very few DC characters who can boast such a rich legacy.

In the year 2023, the movie “Swamp Thing” was among those revealed when Gunn presented the initial line-up of DC Studios. James Mangold, who previously directed “Logan”, is set to direct and describes his vision for the film as a gothic horror story, drawing inspiration from both “Frankenstein” and “RoboCop”. More recently, it’s been announced that Daniel Craig will star in a film based on Sgt. Rock, potentially re-teaming with Luca Guadagnino, his director from the movie “Queer”. As of now, neither project has a confirmed release date.

Absolutely, I’m excited to share that DC Studios isn’t abandoning their iconic characters! Next summer, we’ll witness James Gunn’s take on Superman, featuring David Corenswet as our beloved Man of Steel. Additionally, “The Brave and the Bold” is in the works, a film delving into Batman’s unique bond with Robin. On the small screen, “Lanterns” is making its way, with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre stepping into the roles of Hal Jordan and John Stewart respectively. However, it’s important to note that James Gunn has hinted that not all projects in development may make it to production – it’s all about the quality of the scripts.

Gunn has plenty of experience bringing obscure comic book characters to life. His mainstream breakout came with 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel Studios, which turned niche figures like Star-Lord and Rocket into household names. Gunn has already worked his magic on some of DC’s lesser known characters via The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, both of which were well-received. He has a knack for tapping into what makes these seemingly minor characters special, translating them in a way that resonates with a wide audience. Those sensibilities make him the ideal choice to steer the DC reboot; he isn’t afraid to go outside the box, embracing all corners of the universe and treating them as equals worthy of the spotlight.

Beyond this method, it could invigorate the DC Universe against superhero exhaustion. Previously, viewers have been captivated by movies starring characters such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Although these iconic figures remain relevant in Gunn’s universe, introducing lesser-known characters like Swamp Thing and Sgt. Rock will maintain freshness by showcasing unfamiliar faces. This approach mirrors the refreshing impact of Guardians of the Galaxy, initially perceived as a risk, on Marvel. With directors such as Mangold and Guadagnino at the helm, it promises an exhilarating cinematic experience, potentially fostering new admirers for these comic book adaptations.
