James Gunn Offers Update on DCU Flash Project (And Fans Will Be Disappointed)

As a seasoned comic book enthusiast with over three decades of reading DC comics under my belt, I must say that I’m both excited and cautiously optimistic about the future direction of the DCU. James Gunn has shown an impressive knack for storytelling, as evidenced by his work on Marvel’s Cosmic Guardians of the Galaxy, so I have high hopes for what he can bring to the table at DC Studios.

Anticipation for fresh productions from DC Studios soars sky-high following the DCU reboot. Creature Commandos set the stage, and Superman is poised to launch the universe on the big screen. Ever since he joined DC, fans have speculated about the future online, even engaging creators like James Gunn who frequently address public queries on Threads. When asked about Clayface’s story (scheduled for 2026) being the third production in the opening lineup rather than one featuring a more prominent character such as The Flash, Gunn was direct, confirming it was due to having a fully-fledged and sound script.

At DC, the first and most crucial rule is that no film can begin production until the script is finalized. As for Mike Flanagan’s script, it was indeed ready. Regarding The Flash, Gunn hinted that its movie might take some time within the DC Universe. He also mentioned that the development of The Flash is being delayed a bit. Although there have been no official announcements about a project featuring The Flash, Teen Titans is currently under development as a feature film. In the comics, Wally West was one of the original members of the Teen Titans, but it remains uncertain if this character will be part of the film cast or if the movie will even come to fruition.

Considering all factors, it’s understandable that Gunn might be uncertain about The Flash, given that the 2023 film featuring Ezra Miller underperformed significantly at the box office. Moreover, the tumultuous production of The Flash has been equally noteworthy as its financial failure, with numerous setbacks such as delays and the actor’s personal legal issues grabbing attention in the media.

Despite Gunn’s response, the public continues to ponder the casting for the character of The Flash. Even though we know he will eventually make an appearance, the question remains: who will breathe life into this iconic role? Fan favorites like Grant Gustin are still being suggested as the ideal choice. In fact, Gustin has expressed interest in reprising his role following the end of the CW series that aired from 2014 to 2023. However, according to Gustin, any return depends on the co-CEO of the DCU. It appears they’ve already had discussions, but The Flash was not mentioned in their conversation.

James Gunn has emphasized the significance of an organized structure within studio management, aiming to help DC Studios regain audience favor. The production of The Flash, which might take a while, now requires patience from fans. However, given that this revised strategy led by Gunn and Peter Safran seems promising, it’s possible the delay could prove beneficial in the end.
