As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming animated series “Creature Commandos” has me utterly thrilled! The blend of horror, action, and comedy is a recipe for an unforgettable adventure, and the star-studded cast only sweetens the pot.
Just as many comic book characters, the Creature Commandos initially appeared in a different series rather than their own. Specifically, this monster-themed squad debuted in issue #93 of the 1980’s Weird War Tales. Now, around four decades later, they’re moving into the spotlight through an animated show from DC Studios, which has been announced by studio head James Gunn to celebrate the team’s anniversary.
Today is the anniversary of the debut of the Creature Commandos in WEIRD WAR TALES issue 93. Created by JM DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, with cover art from Joe Kubert, they are the inspiration for the upcoming DC Studios’ Creature Commandos show set to release this December, which Gunn tweeted on Wednesday that you might find as captivating as we do.
In the initial lineup, we had Warren Grifffith, a werewolf; two GI Robots; Dr. Myrra Rhodes, a Gorgon; Lt. Matthew Shrieve, a regular human soldier; Pvt. Elliot Taylor, modeled after Frankenstein; and Sgt. Vincent Velcro, a vampire. However, the team that will be seen in the series will have a fresh look, as some well-known characters from classic DC Comics join the action.
Who’s all in Creature Commandos?
The animated series, Creature Commandos, boasts an impressive cast, many of whom are set to appear in upcoming live-action DC Universe productions too. In this show, Sean Gunn takes on the role of Weasel, Frank Grillo portrays Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova stars as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma is The Bride, Zoe Chao plays Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk voices Dr. Phosphorus, David Harbour stars as Eric Frankenstein, Sean Gunn lends his voice to G.I. Robot, and Steve Agee (from Peacemaker) reprises his character, John Economos.
“Creature Commandos is built around an exceptional squad from DC Comics,” Gunn had mentioned earlier about the series. “In our version of the DC Universe, animation will be seamlessly connected with live-action. This includes television shows, movies, and video games all existing within the same world. We’re planning to hire actors who can portray these characters not only in this project but also in other future endeavors, some of which we have already cast. I’ve penned all seven episodes of the show, and it’s currently being produced. That’s the initial plan, and I am really excited about it.”
The Creature Commandos are set to make their premiere on Max in December; however, a specific launch date is still pending announcement. It’s worth noting that Robbie Thompson penned every episode of this series.
