James Gunn Promises Superman Movie Songs Won’t Distract From the Score

As a die-hard fan who has grown up watching Superman since the 1978 movie, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement about James Gunn‘s upcoming take on the Man of Steel. The director’s knack for infusing his films with an eclectic soundtrack, particularly in Guardians of the Galaxy, was a breath of fresh air in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it seems that he has learned from his previous successes and is choosing to approach Superman differently.

James Gunn assures us that the music in the upcoming Superman film won’t take away from the storyline. Unlike his Guardians of the Galaxy series, which stood out due to its nostalgic soundtrack within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he didn’t aim to replicate this strategy for Superman. During a visit to the set, Gunn shared insights about the music in the DCU’s Superman with ComicBook and other media outlets. The teaser for Superman features a cover of the theme from John Williams’ score for the 1978 film, leading reporters to ask Gunn about this selection, as well as his overall approach to music for this movie.

Gunn clarified that while there are influences from Williams and Murphy’s music, the composition in question isn’t a soundtrack but a score. He emphasized that it differs from his past projects because the score is what propels the movie forward, making it more of a “score film.

It might bring comfort to fans, even if they had anticipated it somewhat. The music selection for Guardians of the Galaxy, being an intentional choice, aligns well with the storyline since Peter Quill’s Walkman was one of his cherished items from Earth. This method wouldn’t feel as organic when applied to Superman, and Gunn has the expertise to recognize this fact.

In his 2021 film “The Suicide Squad,” Gunn incorporated some well-known tunes, but not as extensively as in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and not serving as a primary element. Collaborating with composer John Murphy on that project, they created a score that outshines the soundtrack. Murphy was responsible for the music of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” and is now teaming up with Gunn in the DCU for “Superman.

In this new production, David Corenswet portrays Clark Kent (Superman) while Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois Lane. Additionally, Isabela Merced joins as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi becomes Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion assumes Green Lantern’s identity, Anthony Carrigan steps into Metamorpho’s character, and Nicholas Hoult dons the cape as Lex Luthor. This film marks the commencement of a fresh DC Universe continuity and represents the initial live-action project. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, shoulders the responsibility as both writer and producer for this groundbreaking movie.

On July 11, 2025, you can catch Superman in theaters. Meanwhile, the DC Universe’s debut production, “Creature Commandos,” is currently available for streaming on Max.
