James Gunn Reveals Creature Commandos NYCC Panel Will Address DCU Future

As a seasoned gamer and DC Universe enthusiast with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I must say that the upcoming events surrounding DC Studios are nothing short of exhilarating! From the tantalizing glimpses of the new slate to the promise of interconnected stories across various platforms, it feels like we’re on the cusp of a new golden age for DC fans.

In January 2023, the co-CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, unveiled their plan for the future of the DC entertainment franchise to the world. This plan, known as the new DCU, includes movies like Superman, The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and The Authority, as well as television shows such as Lanterns, Creature Commandos, Booster Gold, Waller, and Paradise Lost. Now, with the Creature Commandos show set to debut on Max on December 5th, fans of DC may get more insights into the future of the DCU through the show’s New York Comic Con panel. Gunn has announced via social media that he, along with the cast members of Creature Commandos including Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Zoe Chao, Sean Gunn, Dean. Lorey, and Steve Agee, will be participating in a panel at NYCC on October 19th, where they will share details about their monster army and the early stages of the DCU.

The animated show titled “Creature Commandos” features a group of monsters who have been locked up, but are now recruited to handle missions too risky for humans. When all other options fail, they serve as your least preferred choice. The series is both written and executive produced by Gunn. In the context of Gunn’s new DCU, “Creature Commandos” takes place within the rebooted DC Universe, marking its first project. However, Gunn has clarified that it should be seen more as a prelude or appetizer to what’s coming next, with the upcoming live-action “Superman” movie being the actual beginning of things.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but echo James Gunn’s sentiments: Superman sets the foundation for something truly epic, a grand saga if you will. Regarding Creature Commandos, it serves as a delightful morsel, giving fans a taste of what to expect and perhaps paving the way for more.

Gunn also pointed out that the show is packed with nods to other DC material, as well as teases for future events. He further stated that it’s an exceptionally enjoyable way to begin the series.

Previously, Gunn has made it clear that future DCU projects will be interconnected, ranging from animation to games and everything in between. This unified approach enables characters like Rick Flag, Sr., played by Grillo, to appear across different projects, such as in “Creature Commandos” and the second season of “Peacemaker.” Moreover, Gunn hinted that a key character from “Creature Commandos” will also make an appearance in the live-action Max series, titled “Waller.

In 2023, Gunn explained that for the DC Universe (DCU), we’re blending animation seamlessly with live-action. This means that TV shows, films, and games will all share a common universe and be interconnected.

What can fans anticipate from the Creature Commandos panel at NYCC regarding the future of the DC Universe? Although there are numerous paths things could follow, during a recent earnings call, Warner Bros. chief David Zaslav hinted that James Gunn and Peter Safran will soon provide a comprehensive overview of what lies ahead for the next ten years within DC Studios.

At that point, I got a sneak peek at what James and Peter are working on, and it definitely hints at an intriguing direction for the new DC under their management. You’ll be hearing more from them in the upcoming months… In the coming period, they will provide a comprehensive overview of their vision for the next 10 years.

Creature Commandos arrives on Max on December 5th. The show’s NYCC panel takes place October 19th.
