James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads at DC Studios, unveiled their lineup of films and TV shows, introducing a linked cinematic realm – the freshly minted DC Universe (DCU). Alongside forthcoming titles like Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Clayface, The Brave and the Bold, Peacemaker, and Lanterns, all taking place within the same multiverse as Creature Commandos, there’s an additional aspect: DC Elseworlds.
In his reveal of Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters in 2023, Safran clarified that although the DCU is a multiverse, our main focus will be on one specific universe within this vast collection. He also emphasized that anything not part of the DCU will be explicitly distinguished.
This collection includes movies such as “Joker: Duo Delirium” (not connected to DC Studios) and HBO’s “The Penguin”, a spin-off of “The Batman” film, which exists in its own timeline (along with its sequel, “The Batman: Chapter II,” also produced by DC Studios). The adult animated series “Harley Quinn,” starting with its fifth season, falls under the DC Studios banner. However, it does not share the same continuity as the animated “Creature Commandos” and thus the DC Universe. If you’re feeling puzzled, let me try to clarify…
DC Studios now oversees all DC television and film projects. Since ‘Harley Quinn’ was made before us, we felt it wasn’t right to add our DC Studio fanfare to it. In ‘The Penguin’, where we had some involvement in development, a different DC Studios [animation] is used at the end.
Gunn stated that the studio is now developing an “Elseworlds” opening, which will be connected to off-continuity projects such as The Batman 2 and possible future series derived from Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga. The term “Elseworlds” originates from a DC imprint that releases self-contained stories not tied to the standard DC comic book lore, such as Kingdom Come and Superman: Red Son.
During a recent conversation, Gunn expressed that DC Studios is dedicated to sharing DC Elseworlds tales as well as unfolding a “grand, epic narrative” throughout the films and television shows in the DC Universe.
In simpler terms, Gunn expressed his desire to explore alternative tales for characters like Superman. He prefers to have the flexibility to portray these heroes distinctly from their traditional DC Universe counterparts. What excites him about DC comics is that they offer a wealth of Elseworlds stories, where characters such as Wonder Woman, Batman, and especially Superman, appear in various forms across different narratives.
He went on to say, “That’s part of what makes it exciting about DC, I believe. ‘Watchmen’ is a tale spun by DC that doesn’t align with their usual comic book chronology.
Here are the upcoming DC Studios releases: Superman is scheduled for July 11 in cinemas, followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow on June 26, 2026, and Clayface on September 11, 2026. Projects currently in development with undetermined release dates include the second season of Peacemaker, HBO’s Lanterns, and season 2 of Creature Commandos.
