As a long-time DC Comics fan, I’ve witnessed quite a rollercoaster ride with the big screen adaptations of my beloved characters. But after years of waiting and hoping for a cohesive universe that does justice to these iconic heroes, it seems like we’re finally getting there under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios.
The Justice League brings together Earth’s most powerful superheroes, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, The Flash, and Green Lantern. However, with the introduction of a new DC Universe by DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, which kicks off Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters featuring the animated series “Creature Commandos” on Max before the summer release of the upcoming “Superman” film, it’s possible that some may question: “Who are they?
In essence, although Creature Commandos marks a fresh start in terms of continuity, it incorporates elements from the former DC Extended Universe. For instance, Rick Flag’s (Joel Kinnaman) demise in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and the aftermath of Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) daughter revealing her misuse of power as head of Task Force X in Peacemaker, are among these carried-over events.
According to Gunn at New York Comic Con, “References made in the DC Universe to past events are considered part of the DC Universe’s continuity when they are mentioned by us.
In the finale of Peacemaker, penned and helmed by Gunn, a cameo from the Justice League will not be featured, contrary to expectations. Following Peacemaker (John Cena) and his team’s successful mission to save Earth from the threat posed by the Butterflies – parasitic aliens who took control of human bodies – the arrival of the Justice League was unfortunately too late to aid in the defense against the impending invasion.
In a surprising turn of events, the Peacemaker vocalized his displeasure towards Aquaman, portrayed by Jason Momoa, and Flash, played by Ezra Miller. Accompanying them were Superman and Wonder Woman, who, however, were not their usual selves – instead, Brad Abramenko took on the role of the Man of Steel, while Kimberley von Ilberg stepped into Gal Gadot’s shoes as the Amazon warrior. Regrettably, Batman (Ben Affleck) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) failed to make an appearance at this gathering.
In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn classified The Suicide Squad film and the initial Peacemaker series as “lighter segments” of the DC Universe that also feature Creature Commandos and the upcoming DC Universe.
In a nutshell, “Peacemaker” is generally easy to follow, except for the unexpected appearance of a specific team [the Justice League] towards the end. At this point in time, they haven’t been established yet,” Gunn explained. “However, if something from the past is referenced in one of the new DCU productions, then it’s considered as part of the continuity. So that’s our approach.
The animated series “Creature Commandos” presents Rick Flag Sr., the father of Flag, who will be seen in live-action roles in the years 2025, appearing in both “Superman” and “Peacemaker” season 2. These are the upcoming projects in the DCU lineup alongside “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” and “Lanterns”.
The DCU Justice League
In the story of Creature Commandos, it’s not certain which Justice League members are currently active. However, Tyler Gunn’s Superman will present a younger version of Superman (played by David Corenswet) along with other superheroes: Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), the Green Lantern (Guy Gardner) portrayed by Nathan Fillion, and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan). These characters have all been part of the Justice League and Justice League International in the comics.
In the upcoming series “Gods and Monsters”, it’s been verified that some iconic superheroes will make an appearance. Among these is Kara Zor-El, Kal-El’s Kryptonian cousin, who will lead the movie adaptation of “Supergirl”; Hal Jordan and John Stewart, Earth’s Green Lanterns, in HBO’s “Lanterns” series; and, as yet uncast, the duo of Batman and Robin in “Brave and the Bold”.
DC Studios is working on several exciting projects. Among them, a film based on Sgt. Rock, with Daniel Craig being considered for the lead role. Also in the pipeline is an animated movie titled Dynamic Duo, focusing on Robin characters Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Additionally, movies like The Authority and Swamp Thing are under development, along with live-action series such as Waller, Booster Gold, and Paradise Lost, all set on the island of Themyscira. As mentioned by Gunn, voice actors from the animated projects may carry over to live-action roles if needed.
According to Gunn, the global political landscape is quite stable with clear divisions between those who wield power (the metahumans) and those who don’t; the influencers (power brokers) and those without influence. We get a hint of this in Creature Commandos, but a more detailed look can be found in Superman and Peacemaker.
Following the occurrences of “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker”, a fresh series unfolds with Amanda Waller (played by Davis) establishing Project M, named for ‘M’ representing monsters. As Task Force X, or the Suicide Squad, is disbanded by Congress, she enlists Rick Flag Sr. (Grillo) to command a new squad of dangerous monster convicts assigned for missions deemed too risky for humans. The team includes characters such as The Bride (Indira Varma), Frankenstein (David Harbour), Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), Dr. Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), and GI Robot and Weasel (Sean Gunn).
DC Studios’ Creature Commandos is streaming Dec. 5 on Max.
