James Gunn Reveals Plans for Three Guardians of the Galaxy Spinoffs (But Will They Happen?)

As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who has seen the Guardians of the Galaxy soar through space and conquer cosmic adversaries, I must say that James Gunn’s departure from the franchise leaves me with a mix of nostalgia and curiosity. The Guardians, under Gunn’s masterful direction, have become one of the most beloved teams in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At the moment, it’s uncertain if James Gunn will continue working on the Guardians of the Galaxy series. As a co-CEO of DC Studios, he’s currently focused on establishing the new DC Universe continuity. However, his previous characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, namely The Guardians of the Galaxy, are still active. In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn shared some potential Guardians projects he had talked about while he was still at Marvel.

According to Gunn, there were numerous ideas that he and his Marvel co-workers wished to delve into for the Guardians series but didn’t have time to. He mentioned: “The Ravagers show could’ve been interesting, honestly we had a great concept for it. And Rocket & Groot… To be frank, Rocket & Groot was essentially what Guardians 3 was meant to be. I wanted to produce Rocket & Groot first, but instead of that, I was persuaded to create Guardians 3. I felt the need to narrate Rocket’s tale.

Regarding any future involvement with the Guardians, Gunn himself isn’t certain if he will be part of it or not. When inquired about his ongoing contractual commitments to the Guardians, he expressed: “I’m unsure about the specifics of the legal side. I don’t have a definitive answer, but I’m thrilled to see them continue their adventures with the Guardians, exploring new tales for those characters.

If Gunn isn’t participating, he’s quite content to observe. He mentioned: “Chris [Pratt], they all have my approval. Chris repeatedly asks, ‘Is this alright?’ and I respond, ‘Hey buddy, it’s all good with me.’ Chris can do whatever he wants. I’d be thrilled to see him play Star-Lord again.

What’s Next for the Guardians of the Galaxy

At the moment, there are no Guardians movies or TV series planned by Marvel, but it doesn’t rule out their future involvement. The latest Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Vol. 3, was released just last year as part of Phase Five within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), indicating they have a role in the Multiverse Saga. This opens up the possibility that they might appear in crossovers for any upcoming movies, particularly the two Avengers titles on their schedule. Additionally, Marvel has reserved two release dates – one in February 2026 and another in November 2026 – for unannounced projects, which could potentially involve the Guardians.

Absolutely, should the Guardians reappear, their roster might undergo a change. Karen Gillan expressed her desire to keep portraying Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Pratt hinted at returning as Star-Lord if the script was compelling, but Zoe Saldana has confirmed that Vol. 3 marked her final outing as Gamora. The film also introduced fresh characters and formally established some of them as part of the Guardians squad.

Currently, you can stream all three films from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” series on Disney+. Upcoming in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World“, set to release on February 14, 2025.
